Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 8vo. stapled booklets uniformly bound in colored wrappers (cream, blue, green, red, tan) with letters in the same color on the front cover and a stylized image in the same color on the front wrapper of a bird in flight. Each issue contains from 32 to 35 pages of poetry from various authors. Wrappers on each slightly faded around the edges, corners square and flat, occasional check marks within (see explanation below), just touches of rust on the staples, else near fine to fine with no other internal markings. Each and every issue has a page number noted in ink on the front wrapper that refers to poems by Celeste Turner Wright. Wright (1906-1999) was the first tenured woman faculty member at UC Davis, spending 51 years there and chairing the English Department and related academic units for 21 years. Stanton Arthur Coblentz (1896-1982) wrote novels, works of literary criticism and history, and poetry. Today he is best known as a science fiction author, though that was not the bulk of his work. He was the Editor and founder of WINGS (a Quarterly of Verse) and head of The Wings Press, Mill Valley, CA and New York. Douglas V. Kane was Associate Editor of WINGS. Six issues sold as one lot.

Magazine. Zustand: Fair. (Vol. X, No. 9). [well-worn copy, with quite a bit of damage to the spine (gaps in covering), which has several old horizontal tape-repairs, to the point where the covers, although both present, are esentially detached from the text block and just barely holding together; the front cover is lightly soiled and typically edgeworn, but complete except for a tiny chip at the upper left corner; the pages are age-toned but still reasonably supple]. (B&W illustrations) Goodis's short novel, "Achtung--Stormaviks!" is one the three featured "Novels of Flaming Air War" in this issue, the other two being: "Death Trips the Guns" by R. Keene Lee; and "Hell-bent for Glory" by Walt Sheldon. Short stories: "The Last Zero" (Jackson V. Scholz); "Jinx Run" (Scott Sumner); "Combat on the Cuff" (Andrew A. Caffrey); "Dead Stick Man" (Albert G. Schofield). There's also a one-page illustrated feature about "the Scourge of Guadalcanal," Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Joe Foss. Following the failure of his first novel, "Return from Oblivision," in 1940, Goodis temporarily abandoned the world of serious literature to toil in the pulp jungle, reportedly turning out hundreds of stories and novelettes (some under pseudonyms), many in the "air warfare" genre, as here. Although Goodis's pulp-magazine fiction has not been collected or even fully documented (as far as I can determine), this is likely one of his last works to appear in this format, since by the time of its appearance he had again begun to turn out hardcover fiction -- "Dark Passage" in 1946 followed by two more novels in 1947 -- and had done a stint in Hollywood (working, among other projects, with director/writer Delmer Daves on the screenplay for DARK PASSAGE). That resurgence would prove transitory, however, and by 1950 he had retreated to the city of his birth and was on his way to becoming "the Pulp Kafka of Philadelphia" (so dubbed by his best chronicler, Jay A. Gertzman) by virtue of the string of paperback originals, generally considered his best and most enduring work, that he wrote between 1950 and 1957. "Achtung--Stormaviks!" deals with a mercenary American pilot who's on the run internationally from some underworld types, and whose "guns flew for the highest bidder" -- in this case the Russians, which inevitably puts him on course for some action-packed aerial conflict with the Luftwaffe (and mixes him up with a pretty young American woman who's also working for the Russkies, as an intelligence agent).
