In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 3rd Edition. London 1876, thick 4to, Original Cloth Gilt, Gilt Title on Upper cover ' Sailing Directory for the Indian Ocean' hinges repaired (2) xxxvi, 1215, 16 maps mostly folding, this edition is mispaginated there are no pp xi-xii in any 1876 copy of this work. Third and Enlarged Edition. In 18…76, A Directory for the Navigation of the Indian Ocean by Alexander George Findlay was a comprehensive guide for mariners navigating the Indian Ocean. It detailed coasts, islands, winds, monsoons, currents, and passages from the Cape of Good Hope to the Strait of Sunda and Western Australia, including the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. This third edition, published by Richard Holmes Laurie, provided essential navigational information for sailors of the time. This work described in detail the Bay of Bengal, The Malabar Coast; 'The Red Sea', 'The Southern Coasts of Arabia' and 'The Persian Gulf' Sharjah ('Shargeh'), Dubai ('Debay') and Abu Dhabi ('Abu Thabi') are all described, as is Al Bida and Doha ('Doheh') on the Qatar ('Kutr') coast, and there are quite long descriptions of Bahrain ('Bahrein') and Kuwait ('Koweit'). The general maps of the Indian Ocean depict currents and prevailing winds and monsoon directions. Some of the maps of individual islands derive from earlier surveys: the map of the Keeling Islands is that surveyed by Fitzroy and used in the Narrative of the Voyage of the Beagle. "Between 1869 and 1875 Findlay [1812-1875] prepared and published six navigational directories which in text, maps, and diagrams documented the winds, currents, coastlines, and other information necessary for navigation in the major oceans of the world. The directories ran to several editions and were regarded as the standard authorities" (ODNB). His Indian Ocean directory was first published in 1866. A friend of David Livingstone, Findlay took a keen interest in exploration in Africa, mapping routes taken by Burton and others.

In den WarenkorbLarge 8vo (170 x 255 mm). (2), VI, (2), VII-XXXVI, 639, 639a-h, 640-1110, (2) pp. With 15 (mostly folding) maps (many in colour) and numerous text illustrations. Contemporary giltstamped cloth. Second, enlarged edition of this standard work, first published in 1866. An encyclopedic volume of over 1000 pages with a detailed index…. The chapters include descriptions of the coasts and islands of the Cape Colony; coast of Kaffraria and Natal; Eastern Africa; Madagascar and the Mozambique Channel; the coast of Africa, between Cape Delgado and the Red Sea; the Red Sea, etc. - In particular, Findlay devotes much attention to the coasts of Arabia and onwards to the Arabian Gulf, providing rich detail about the port of Aden, navigating and anchoring around Ras Arah and Ghubbet Seylan, the population of Masirah Island, the climate of the Gulf and its threats to Western health, topography of the coastal settlements, information on the reefs and pearl banks, etc. The discussion of the Gulf ("Our acquaintance with the hydrography of the Persian Gulf is nearly perfect") includes intelligence on Sharjah ("Shargeh"), "the most important town on the coast", numbering 8,000 to 10,000 inhabitants, and on Dubai ("Debay"), "a large town of 5,000 or 6,000 inhabitants" standing "a little back from the shore" and "recognizable as being the last town on the coast, there being not a single date-tree or house from this all the way to Abu Thabi". The coast is described as "quite barren and uninhabited, throughout very low, with tufts of mangrove bush", and "so uniform in appearance that the smallest peculiarities are noted by the Arabs, and names given to them". Abu Dhabi ("Abothubbee") is noted as "the most populous town on the coast", containing "about 20,0000 inhabitants" and sending "600 boats to the pearl fishery. The chief is very friendly to the English. Cattle might be obtained here". - Binding rubbed; hinges split. Some foxing throughout as common; repeatedly annotated quite ungraciously by a 20th century hand in coloured ballpoint and broad felt-tip pen. A later edition (from Humphrey Winterton's library) commanded £720 at Sotheby's in 2003. - Mill (Cat. of the RGS Library) 160. OCLC 217065553.

In den WarenkorbFourth edition, expanded issue, with the 169-page addenda for 1897 updating and supplementing the text. Findlay's directory includes significant discussion of the passages and coasts in Arabia and the Gulf, as well as plans of wind systems, the Aden anchorage, and the currents and ice drifts of the Arabian Sea. Chapter XII, "The… South Coast of Arabia", describes the present state of Aden, including its economy, telegraph connections, and neighbouring tribes. Precise descriptions of navigational landmarks are accompanied by summaries of ports of call (Muscat: "the heat at this place is intense, being concentrated by the hills like a parabolic mirror" - p. 815). Chapter XIII is devoted to intelligence on the Gulf and references Sharjah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. "Our acquaintance with the hydrography of the Persian Gulf is nearly perfect" (p. 822). The climate is described as "one of the most trying imaginable" (p. 824) and a danger to the health of Europeans, and much is made of the region's healthy trade in dates and pearls. Abu Dhabi (Abu Thabi) provides the best pilots, while Bushire boasts yearly exports of over one million pounds. Folding frontispiece colour map of wind systems in 2 sheets, 16 maps and plans (4 colour, 12 folding). Original blue morocco-grain cloth lettered in gilt and decorated in blind, dark blue surface-paper endpapers, edges speckled dark red. A little worming and marking to cloth, small area of skinning to front endpaper, frontispiece sheets foxed: a very good copy.
