Erstausgabe
[Fantasy] FIRST EDITION, first state binding. Octavo (20 x 13cm), pp.viii; 347 [1]. Publisher's brown cloth with titles in gilt to spine (second state binding has black titles to spine), and in blind to upper. A lovely clean copy internally, with some toning to edges and light spotting to endpapers. Spine sunned, with rubbing to head and tail, and heavy dulling to gilt. Corners bumped. Very good. A case of three men on a boat (to say nothing of the dog) quickly turns into a fantasy adventure on a lost desert island which harbours a superstitious population, and a secret volcano cave containing two humans from a past Great Age in suspended animation. When they are awoken a love story is added to the mix and, disapproving of the raging Great War in Europe, one of them attempts to destroy half the world in order to save the rest.
