In tan dust jacket: good condition, intact and wraps around the covers, but shows significant tearing to the edges, with an approx 1" x 1 1/2" piece missing from spine. German language. First edition of "Im Westen Nichts Neues", which translates in English to "In the West, Nothing is New". Known colloquially as "All Quiet on the Western Front", a semi-autobiographical by a German veteran of WWI. The novel describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental trauma during the war as well as detachment from civilian life upon returning home. The book was banned and burned in Nazi Germany, but still sold in the millions and has been adapted to film at least three times. 288 pp. Inlaid with a 3-page pamphlet which seems to contain blurbs from reviews, and has a black & white photograph of Remarque on the first page.

Offsetting to endpapers and half title from the dust jacket. Solid text block. Light dust along top edge of text block. In the publisher's first state dust jacket, toning to spine, short closed tears along lower edge, free of restoration. A delicate example, identical to the first state jacket, published in January of 1929. A scarce example of this important 20th Century work. All Quiet on the Western Front first appeared in print form on November 10, 1928, being serialized in the Berlin newspaper, Vossische Zeitung, with the early title of "Nichts Neues im Westen." The book was released on January 31, 1929, with a remarkable 30,000 copies in the initial run. It quickly sold over 450,000 copies and was translated into 26 languages the first year of publication. Very Good with lean to binding, chintz cloth repair reinforcing spine, light soiling and faint creases to covers. Cover partly detached from block with adhesive binding a little brittle and exposed at front inner hinge. Former owner's name date in pencil on half title, contents lightly tanned. Scarce uncorrected proof of this classic novel set in World War I. Adapted into film three times, all of which have won numerous awards.

A presentation copy signed and inscribed by Erich Maria Remarque on the front free endpaper, "This first edition copy with pleasure to Arthur W. Kelly." Kelly was a British film executive and perhaps Remarque was shopping his novel around for a potential film adaptation. In 1930, the novel was adapted into a critically acclaimed film directed by Lewis Milestone, and was the first talkie war film to win an Oscar. Bound in publisher's original beige cloth lettered in maroon and black. Near Fine with light lean to binding, light toning to edges and spine cloth, light worming primarily to textblock fore-edge and lighter-so on front free endpaper and half-title page, dust-soiling and foxing to top of textblock edge. In a Very Good dust jacket, with toning to and a small interior chip the spine panel, light chipping and wear to the edges and flap folds. A wildly successful novel which sold 2.5 million copies in 22 languages in its first eighteen months in print. Originally serialized in the Vossische Zeitung in late 1928, it was published here for the first time in book form in German in January 1929, preceding the English and American first editions.
