Vicenza, Giovanni Rossi, 1800. Octavo (23.5 × 18.5 cm). Contemporary interim binding covered with marbled paper; 176 pp. with a frontispiece by Pietro Vitali after Franc. Menageot, a copperplate engraving, a mezzotint plate, and an engraved folding plate, as well as numerous text woodcuts of seals and notarial marks. Light foxing; interim binding with minor wear and rubbing, especially to spine; else very good. First and only edition of this treatise by the Servite Filippo Antonio Disconzi on two late medieval Marian apparitions on Monte Berico and the subsequent accounts of miracle. Disconzi's work was shaped by and responded to the changes in philosophy and science at the end of the eighteenth century. To this day, the church on Monte Berico remains an important Marian pilgrimage site, but also a tourist attraction in the environs of Vicenza, where architects and painters have worked continuously since the early fifteenth century. While the works of Bartolomeo Montagna and Veronese have survived, extensions and alterations led to the demolition of a chapel that had meanwhile presumably been built according to designs by Andrea Palladio. A magnificent Baroque domed structure took the place of the Renaissance building. The late Gothic original church, however, remained. It was incorporated into the Baroque church as its choir. For this building is itself the result and testimony of the event that established the significance of the pilgrimage site. At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the Veneto was afflicted by a twenty-four-year-long, almost uninterrupted epidemic of plague. One day, the peasant woman Vincenza Pasini (a portrait of her is said to be reproduced in the mezzotint plate) is said to have first seen the Virgin appear to her in overwhelming beauty (as stated in the documents printed in the book), who conveyed to her that the plague would not end unless a church in her honor were erected on Monte Berico according to the plan she herself had marked out with a wooden cross. When the peasant woman reported the event to the bishop, she was sent away. After a series of further minor signs of miracles, the Mother of God is said to have appeared again in August 1428. More and more people made pilgrimages to Monte Berico. That same month, the decision was made to build the church. And thus the tenth miracle is reported: "After this wonderful devotion had been introduced, the disease diminished in severity through divine favor to the same extent that this devotion began to grow and the building to rise, so that, once the church had been roofed and brought to completion, the plague completely ceased down to the present day." The pilgrimage site was administered by the mendicant order of the Servites, particularly devoted to the veneration of Mary. Disconzi brings together historical records and reproduces seals and notarial signs in meticulous detail. In doing so, he is concerned not merely with the accounts of miracles, but also with historical evidence relating to the prehistory of the site as well as to the architectural and artistic development of the pilgrimage church. Thus, for example, he cites the source for the payment to Veronese, which he was still able to trace in an account book that has since been lost (see Furio Rinaldi and Xavier F. Salomon, Paolo Veronese's Portrait Drawing of Fra' Damiano Grana, in: Master Drawings, vol. 58, no. 1, pp. 3-14). Disconzi also reports on Palladio's building. This archival approach is shaped by the changes in discourse in the late eighteenth century. This is already apparent in the preface, when Disconzi writes that perhaps some modern philosopher ("moderno Filosofo") would laugh at his collection and put the book aside with the customary gesture: "Miracles, signs of miracles are bigoted absurdities, incompatible with the great light of philosophy." He goes on to state that he is aware that the events in question would have to be examined from every angle by the strictest c.
