Demblée, une importance toute particulière fut reconnue à la sculpture qui en constitue lune des expressions les plus valables. Dans un premier temps, leffort se porta sur la récolte intensive à travers limmense région au c½ur du continent africain, confiée à ladministration belge. Bientôt cependant ces collections de plus en plus importantes firent lobjet détudes systématiques et d'essais dinterprétation esthétique et socio-culturelle. Une évolution plus récente a conduit le Musée à élargir son champ dactivité à l'ensemble des sociétés traditionnelles de lAfrique subsaharienne. Cette extension s'est concrétisée par une politique dacquisition sous forme dachat de pièces importantes, voire même de collections et par la récolte sur place par des spécialistes qualifiés appartenant ou non à linstitution même. Déjà en 1963, il fut possible de présenter, à la suite de lexposition « Arts dAfrique dans les collections belges », une sélection d'½uvres représentatives dun nombre important de sociétés négro-africaines non congolaises (zaïroises). Depuis, cet effort sest poursuivi et développé, au point que les collections dAfrique centrale, uniques par leur ampleur et la qualité des objets, se situent à présent dans un cadre de référence suffisamment large et de valeur croissante. Les vingt-cinq planches de cette plaquette ne constituent pas à vrai dire un échantillonnage représentatif de la grande diversité ergologique et stylistique de la sculpture négro-africaine; elles rendent compte néanmoins des principales tendances formelles qui se font jour dans lart de sociétés éparpillées à travers laire dextension de cet art. Des Teda du Tibesti (nord de la République du Tchad) aux Luba du Shaba (Katanga) (sud-est de la République du Zaïre), sétend une vaste aire géographique aux biotopes extrêmement variés, habitée par des populations de souches différentes et quopposent en outre des économies et des cultures diversement orientées.
