Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition, Special Edition. An attractive album of 20 albumen prints from 1885 (dated from gift presentation inscription). The photographer can be identified from the 'G.W.W.' initials present in the photograph captions.  Pioneering Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-1893) founded G.W. Wilson & Co., a Scottish photographic firm. Beginning as a portrait photographer, he became photographer to the Royal family in the 1850s, and during the 1860s moved more towards landscape photography. The company was based in Aberdeen and the University of Aberdeen now holds a collection of over 40,000 glass plates negatives of his work. This album carries a the simple title of 'Photographs' in gilt on a red cloth hardback book.  The album comprises original albumen prints mounted onto card pages, with blank guard separators. Prints are typically 122mm high x 200mm wide (approx 5" x 8"), and there are 20 in total. Subject matter is as follows: Geographically the photographs cover a considerable number of Scottish locations. These include Edinburgh from Calton Hill; Holyrood Palace and Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh; Abbotsford, Melrose Abbey; Dryburgh Abbey; Burn's Cottage, Alloway, Ayr; Glasgow Cathedral; Kilchurn Castle; Oban; Staffa; Iona Cathedral and St. Oran's Chapel; Glencoe; Ben Nevis; Loch Coruisk, Skye; Aberdeen; Balmoral; Queen's View; Stirling Castle; Loch Katrine; and; Loch Lomond. Subject matter is primarily landscapes, city views, historic buildings and beautiful views. Overall photographs are in very good condition with excellent detail and retaining good tonality. The card mount pages have spotting, but the photographs are largely unaffected. Gilt edges to mount leaves. An interesting and attractive collection of Scottish interest period photographs. Original Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine+. First Printing. A superb copy in original cloth, with twelve albumen prints by Wilson, from his series on towns and villages. Demy 8vo (220 x 179mm): twelve albumen photographs of Dunkeld (97 x 80mm) mounted on card with printed title beneath, each followed by a leaf of descriptive letter press printed on recto only. Original pebbled green cloth paneled in blind, front cover stamped in gilt, brown coated end papers, all edges gilt. Several pages and mounts (not prints) lightly spotted, but an excellent example. Rare. Gernsheim 309. Not in Margolis & Moss. Part of a series of at least 12 titles by Wilson published between 1865 and 1868, each on a separate town or area of England and Scotland and each with twelve views (original albumen prints). Early on, Wilson grasped the potential of photography to provide tourists with souvenirs of their travels, and he began photographing popular haunts and picturesque spots. This volume was one result. Dunkeld is a cathedral town on the north bank of the River Tay, opposite Birnam, called the "Gateway to the Highlands, one of thew best preserved eighteenth-century country towns in Scotland. The surrounding countryside is heavily wooded, and has some notable trees, including the Birnam Oak, believed to be the only remaining tree from Birnam Wood named by Shakespeare in Macbeth. The largest collection of Wilson's workcontaining some 27,000 negativesis the George Washington Wilson Photographic Archive at the University of Aberdeen. N. B. First edition. 8vo., 12 card leaves with mounted albumen photographs, followed by a descriptive letterpress leaf. Light foxing to a few descriptive leaves, heavier on the title page and last leaf; the albumen photographs are richly toned, with the usual light fading at the edges, and in very good condition. All edges gilt and bound in green cloth over beveled boards with rules in blind and titled on the upper cover in gilt; moderate rubbing. The rear board shows evidence of an early dampstain and the front hinge is slightly tender. A very good copy. George Washington Wilson, born in Aberdeen 1823, began his professional career as a portrait and landscape painter. By 1852, he opened a photographic portrait studio in Aberdeen, which thrived, and in 1860, he was appointed as the photographer for Queen Victoria in Scotland. He was a prolific landscape photographer of the British Isles, selling his work in great quantities to the tourists, among others. From 1865 - 1868, he published, PHOTOGRAPHS OF ENGLISH AND SCOTTISH SCENERY, a series of 12 books, each on a specific area or village, and each with 12 mounted albumen photographs.
