Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - We confidently walk down stairs, ride bicycles, and turn our heads without the world spinning out of control, rarely giving a second thought to the biological marvel making it possible. Deep inside your skull, buried within the temporal bone of the inner ear, lies the vestibular system-a microscopic, fluid-filled gyroscope that acts as the human body's ultimate navigation center. This system is an engineering masterpiece. It relies on three tiny, fluid-filled semicircular canals to detect rotational movement, and specialized sensory organs filled with microscopic calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia) that constantly gauge gravity and linear acceleration. When these tiny stones are accidentally dislodged by trauma or aging, the brain receives violently conflicting signals, resulting in the debilitating, room-spinning chaos of vertigo. This anatomical deep-dive demystifies the hidden mechanics of human balance. We explore why reading in a moving car causes motion sickness (the visual system arguing with the vestibular system) and how astronauts suffer severe spatial disorientation when removed from Earth's gravity.By understanding the intricate physics of the inner ear, you can learn how to protect and recalibrate your biological compass. Discover the invisible stones in your head that silently anchor you to the Earth.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - What's the secret to keeping your balance The ear does more than hear: it helps us stay stable by perceiving movements and gravity. Elegant sensors deep within the skull detect every twist, turn, and tumble, powering swift reflexes that keep vision and balance steady. This is the vestibular system. It's primordial and ubiquitous: every animal has one, and even plants have a rudimentary version. It works so well that we take it for granted--until it fails. How does this remarkable system function What happens when it goes haywire How can modern medicine treat vestibular disease The Great Balancing Act tells the story of the vestibular system, from T. rex hearing organs to cochlear implants, and from the unsung power of hair cells to inner-ear problems in outer space. Combining neuroscience, history, and medicine, Jeffrey D. Sharon--a vestibular doctor and researcher--explains the sense of balance using accessible language and wry humor. He recounts how pioneering scientists solved the mysteries of the vestibular system and shows why it is necessary for spatial reasoning and abstract thought. Sharon explores the devastating consequences of vestibular problems such as vertigo, dizziness, and imbalance, offering an expert, patient-friendly look at emerging and future treatments. Engaging and entertaining, this book invites readers to discover a little-known yet vital part of ourselves.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Vestibular physiology has acquired new interest in the past few years. The development of fast aircraft, beginning during the Second World War and continuing through modern supersonic jets and space travel, has increased dramatically the acceleration range to which man is subjected, from prolonged weightlessness to several gs. The labyrinth measures all kinds of acceleration, including gravity. and therefore has taken on particular impor tance in the study of human health in the Space Age. It is understandable. then, that NASA sponsored the Symposium on Vestibular Function and Morphology. a satellite of the Eighth Annual Meeting of the Society of Neuroscience. held October 30-November 1. 1978, at the University of Pittsburgh, which also supported the symposium. The present volume was developed from papers originally presented there. My strategy in editing this book has been to focus upon the vestibular end organ and its direct connections. both peripheral and central, in order to as sure a coherent discussion of the basics of vestibular function, structure, and ultrastructure. Fortunately, it was possible to secure the contributions of a number of outstanding investigators from both the United States and abroad, including functionally oriented morphologists. ultrastructuralists, biophysicists, and vestibular physiologists. The result is a comprehensive discussion of the main mechanisms of the labyrinth: the transduction pro cess at the receptor level, in the semicircular canals, and in the utricular and saccular maculae; the information transfer through neuronal pathways to the nuclei and the cerebellum; and the general organization of the system.
