Soft cover. Zustand: New. 2016 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title: Since the 2006 coup d'etat, Thailand has been riven by two opposing political visions: one which aspires to a modern democracy and the rule of law, and another which holds to the traditional conception of a kingdom ruled by an exemplary Buddhist monarch. Thailand has one of the world's largest populations of observant Buddhists and one of its last politically active monarchies. This book examines the Theravada Buddhist foundations of Thailand's longstanding institution of monarchy. Patrick Jory states that the storehouse of monarchical ideology is to be found in the popular literary genre known as the Jatakas, tales of the Buddha's past lives. The best-known of these, the Vessantara Jataka, disseminated an ideal of an infinitely generous prince as a bodhisatta or future Buddha?an ideal which remains influential in Thailand today. Using primary and secondary source materials largely unknown in Western scholarship, Jory traces the history of the Vessantara Jataka and its political-cultural importance from the ancient to the modern period. Although pressures from European colonial powers and Buddhist reformers led eventually to a revised political conception of the monarchy, the older Buddhist ideal of kingship has yet endured.

Zustand: as new. Stuttgart : Arnoldsche Art Publishers & Zurich : Ethnographic Museum at the University of Zurich, [2017]. Hardcover. 191 pp. : illustrations (chiefly color), map ; 32 cm - Devotion presents, for the very first time, a selection of six full-length Vessantara Jataka picture scrolls and explores a contemporary multimedia celebration of an ancient Buddhist text through in-depth essays. Provides the reader with an exciting journey into unknown stories and narrative structure. The Vessantara Jataka is the tale of Buddha's last life, before he was reborn as the historical Buddha 2,500 years ago. In this earlier existence as Prince Vessantara he demonstrated evidence of the highest virtue that constitutes an enlightened one, namely generosity. Vessantara gave away everything dear to him in the climactic scene of the story even his wife and children. In North-East Thailand the Vessantara tale is celebrated annually as Bun Phra Wet. Vessantara cloths form the visual framework for this festival; they are hand-painted scrolls, which can reach lengths of up to one hundred meters. This book accompanies an exhibition, to be held in the Ethnographic Museum at the University of Zurich, June 20, 2017 to April 4, 2018. Contents : Vessantara Jataka / Thomas Kaiser -- The stuff of the Bun Phra Wet / Leedom Lefferts -- Pha Phra Wet -- the Vessantara cloths / Leedom Lefferts, with contributions by Thomas Kaiser -- Choeyal Drimed Kuenden. The prince who gave up everything to attain enlightenment / Martina Wernsdörfer. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9783897905009. Keywords : ANTHROPOLOGY, buddhism Thailand.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. Summary:The 547 Buddhist jatakas, or verse parables, recount the Buddha's lives in previous incarnations. In his penultimate and most famous incarnation, he appears as the Prince Vessantara, perfecting the virtue of generosity by giving away all his possessions, his wife, and his children to the beggar Jujaka. Taking an anthropological approach to this two-thousand-year-old morality tale, Katherine A. Bowie highlights significant local variations in its interpretations and public performances across three regions of Thailand over 150 years. The Vessantara Jataka has served both monastic and royal interests, encouraging parents to give their sons to religious orders and intimating that kings are future Buddhas. But, as Bowie shows, characterizations of the beggar Jujaka in various regions and eras have also brought ribald humor and sly antiroyalist themes to the story. Historically, these subversive performances appealed to popular audiences even as they worried the conservative Bangkok court. The monarchy sporadically sought to suppress the comedic recitations. As Thailand has changed from a feudal to a capitalist society, this famous story about giving away possessions is paradoxically being employed to promote tourism and wealth.
