Velvet bean is an underutilized tropical legume and possesses immense nutritional quality. It contains similar proportions of protein, lipid, minerals and other nutrients comparable to soybeans and other conventional legumes. The beans have been traditionally used as a food in a number of countries, viz., India, Philippines, Nigeria, Ghana, Brazil and Malawi. Recently the velvet beans are exploited as a protein source in the diets of fish, poultry, pig and cattle after processing. Although the velvet beans contain high levels of protein and carbohydrate, their utilization is limited due to the pressure of a number of antinutritional factors like phenolics, tannins, L-Dopa, lectins, protease inhibitors etc. Mucuna Pruriens L. is one of the popular and important medicinal plants of India. Presently, it is a constituent of more than 200 indigenous drug formulations. All parts of Mucuna pruriens posses valuable medicinal properties and there is a heavy demand of its various preparations in Indian and International drug markets. It is widely used in Ayurveda, and other systems of medicines in different parts of the world. In this publication, a comprehensive account of its phytochemical constituents, traditional uses, pharmacological activities, agronomic practices, genetic resources and improvement work have been included in view of the many recent findings of importants on this plant. Unfortunately even though many researchers all over the world working on Mucuna, only scanty and conflicting information are available regarding its utilization as a food/feed and medical applications. Leaves, flowers, stems, roots, seeds, fruit, and bark can all be constituents of herbal medicines. The medicinal values of these plants lie in their component phytochemicals, which produce definite physiological actions on the human body. Mucuna utilis is a native of South Asia and Malaysia, but presently it is widely grown throughout the tropics. It is a vigorously growing and twining annual plant and has a number of species and hybrids. The trailing vines and leaves are grown mostly for green manuring or temporary pasture. Description: This rare engraving originates from 'Nieuw en Volkomen Woordenboek van Konsten en Weetenschappen .', published by S.J. Baalde, Amsterdam, 1770. This is in fact an early Dutch encyclopaedia.Artists and Engravers: The author of this work is Egbert Buys. Egbert Buys (ca. 1725-1769) started his career as the author of Den Algemeene Spectator. After having been accused of maltreatment of his wife and having caused several scandals, he left for England where he stayed for more than five years. Returned in Amsterdam he published a much enlarged re-edition of the famous English-Dutch dictionary of Sewel in 1766. He continued his work with the publication of a New and complete dictionary of terms of art; Nieuw en volkomen konstwoordenboek in 2 vols. (Amsterdam, 1768), followed in the next year by the first volume of our encyclopedia, which was to be completed with the 10th vol. in 1778. Apart from its importance as a typical 18th-century encyclopedia in the spirit of Diderot's Encyclopedie , the work is still valued for its lexicographical and linguistic contents.
