About the book >.>.> The Varieties of Reference by Gareth Evans presents a comprehensive exploration of the concept of reference in language and thought. Completed in the wake of Evans's untimely death at age 34 in August 1980, the book reflects years of his rigorous inquiry into the mechanisms of reference. This work includes newly written or dictated versions of the Introduction and key chapters, alongside earlier drafts that were heavily annotated, revealing a dynamic process of revision that characterises Evans's approach. In the months leading up to his passing, Evans sought to refine his ideas, particularly evident in chapters 6 and 7, where he developed improved formulations and introduced fresh concepts from his graduate classes on self-identification and self-reference. His iterative process indicates a deep engagement with the subject, continuously challenging and enhancing his understanding. The editor, in presenting the material, has aimed to clarify Evans's intentions, transforming notes and earlier drafts into accessible prose to foster reader comprehension. This approach prioritises making Evans?s complex ideas more approachable, acknowledging the challenges posed by his original texts while ensuring that his insights remain intact. The Varieties of Reference stands as a testament to Gareth Evans?s intellectual legacy, offering readers a structured examination of reference that bridges his final thoughts with the ongoing discourse in the philosophy of language. While rooted in Evans's original editing challenges, the publication makes significant strides toward engaging a broader audience, reflecting the depth and evolution of his explorations into language and meaning.
