September 1878 wurde Upton Sinclair als Sohn einer unvermögenden Südstaatenfamilie in Baltimore/Maryland geboren. Von finanziellen Schwierigkeiten getrieben, zog es ihn und seine Familie jedoch schon wenige Jahre später sein Vater war alkoholkrank nach New York. Aufgrund der finanziellen Probleme seiner Familie wohnte der junge Sinclair mehrfach vorübergehend bei seinen vermögenden Großeltern, die ebenfalls in New York lebten.
