In den WarenkorbFirst edition of one of the earliest books to define modern banking in English, used as an important reference work by Adam Smith during the research for and writing of The Wealth of Nations, especially regarding the estimates of the precious metals imported into Europe; Smith cites its author as "Mr Meggens." Nicolas Magens (16…97-1764) was a prominent 18th-century merchant, banker, and shipowner, and a pioneering figure in international trade. A native of the Duchy of Holstein, Magens moved to London in the 1730s, where he married a British wife and was naturalised in 1737 by a Private Act. Magens became particularly involved in the trade between Britain and the colonies in North America, and indeed was a leading proponent of the establishment of a free trade agreement between Britain and the American colonies. With the armorial bookplate featuring the motto "loyal yet free" of the Goodricke family, baronets of Ribston, Yorkshire. Likely the copy of Sir John Goodricke (1708-89), 5th Baronet of Ribston. His son Sir Henry Goodricke, 6th Baronet of Ribston (d. 1802), served as a diplomat in the Low Countries and published a book in Latin on jurisprudence. The binding shows very slight signs of wear, the spine and extremities of the boards have been professionally restored, minor staining. Otherwise in good condition and altogether an important publication in the invention of modern banking in Europe.l Higgs 749; Kress 5283. Contemporary gold-tooled sprinkled calf. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this major book on trade and banking, an important source for Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. "The author, after a general treatise on trade and on wealth, by which is meant not merely gold and silver, the common medium of trade, but a pre-eminence of industry, manufactures, and commerce, enters into an enquiry…concerning bullion, after which he considers the nature, operation, and effects of banks in general and in particular. The treatise concludes with 'a further illustration of the business of exchange from the tables of Sir Isaac Newton, with remarks and additions" (Palgrave). Nicolaus Magens was a German merchant who lived for many years in England and gained a great reputation in commercial matters. In the Universal Merchant he showed a deep insight into trade mechanisms, and the work is remarkably rich in references to the most eminent authors of that period, such as Vauban, Ustariz, Child, Locke, Mun, and Graumann. The book was highly appreciated by Adam Smith - the Wealth of Nations contains six substantial direct and indirect references to the Universal Merchant, particularly regarding exchange mechanisms and coin systems. The book was translated from the German by William Horsley, who signs the dedication; no German edition, however, preceded it, making this its first publication. References in Higgs to a Hamburg edition of the same year seem to refer to the edition of Magens's essay on insurance.
