Zustand: GOOD. First edition. A very early reader "prepared expressly for the purpose of satisfying a want which has long been felt of a suitable book for the middle classes." Begins with selections from the psalms, but includes a very varied range of material, including much on animals, both exotic -elephant, lion, tiger - and domestic (one selection is entitled 'Wickedness of Abusing a Horse'), stories ('Ichabod Crane' by Washington Irving), fables, poetry and much more. Contains an account of the Willey disaster caused by an avalanche in the White Mountains on Aug 28, 1826 which has been described as the first natural disaster in the United States to capture national attention. Interestingly enough, the account of the execution of Nathan Hale (whose last words - "I regret I have but one life to give for my country" - are now so well-known) laments the fact that not a single monument had been erected to him, and that his heroism remained unknown. 168 pp plus 4 pp of the publisher's catalogue (which notes that this title is "just published") Fair condition in cardboard boards covered with beige printed paper, quarter binding in tan leather (foxing throughout, age toning and tidemarks to the corners of the textblock, rubbing and wear to the covers, with the underlying cardboard exposed in the corners, and rubbing and wear to the spine.) However, despite the cosmetic flaws, the binding remains sturdy and the book is still quite readable - and in fact, easily entices one to dip into it. Very uncommon - no copies of the first edition appear to be on the market.
