The uncommon first edition of Under the Balkans: Notes of a Visit to the District of Philippopolis, written by Liberal Unionist Member of Parliament Robert Jasper More.…Published in 1877, the same year as the Russo-Turkish War. In the publisher's decorative original green cloth, with an engraved frontispiece by Swain, a folding map, a folding table, and an engraved plate of a Bulgarian family. Collated complete. Contains an inscription 'from the author' to half-title. A fascinating account from More's time staying in Philippopolis, modern day Plovdiv in Bulgaria, including stories from locals, his visit to the governor, and his various travels around the area following the April Uprising. His visit was during the final year of Ottoman rule over Bulgaria, with the country becoming independent the following year with the Treaty of Berlin, following the Russo-Turkish war. A Member of Parliament for Shropshire South and then later Ludlow, More took a keen interest in mining and supported Lord Winchilsea's Agricultural Union. In the publisher's decorative original green cloth. Externally, signs of mottling to bottom corners of boards. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities.
