First edition of the first complete translation of the Old Testament by a Jewish translator into English, building upon Leeser's 1845 translation of the five books of the Pentateuch translation in 1845-1846. Folio (10 3/8 x 8 3/8 inches; 275 x 212 mm). Original full brown morocco. Boards ruled and elaborately stamped in gilt. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Binding with some restoration along joints and edges. A bit of foxing, mainly to the preliminaries. Some occasional light dampstaining. Overall a very good copy. "Having published a five-volume Pentateuch-cum-haftarot (lections from the Prophets) translation in 1845-1846, as well as a complete, vocalized and accentuated Hebrew Bible in 1848 (the first such edition published in the U.S.), he proceeded, from April 1852 to September 1853, to extend his translation efforts to the entire Hebrew Bible. The result was his Twenty-Four Books of the Holy Scriptures, the first translation of all of Tanakh into English by a Jew, complete with short explanatory notes. Leeser explained in the preface to his magnum opus that he undertook the project in order to provide Anglophone Jewry with a vernacular version of the Bible "which has not been made by the authority of churches in which they can have no confidence" (pp. iii-iv). The book achieved wide popularity among English-speaking Jews (and even some Gentiles), especially in America, and went through multiple editions." (Sotheby's) "The translation of the Bible was Leeser's great literary achievement and represented many years of patient labor and devotion to a task which he considered sacred. Leeser was not fully equipped for this work, for he was no specialist in Hebrew philology, nor a master if Jewish learning in general, and he was quite conscious of his shortcomings, but he was inspired. He says in his preface: 'I thought in all due humility that I might safely go to task, confidently relying upon that superior aid which is never withheld from the inquirer after truth.' He made good use of the various German translations by Jews of the collective commentary known as the Biur (vol. III, sec. 81), and of other Jewish exegetic works. As a result his translation though based in style upon the King James version can be considered an independent work for the changes he produced are numerous and great. His prime concern was to supply the traditional interpretation when necessary and the retention of the Jewish spirit, at times even at the expense of beauty of style. The translation went through numerous editions, and until the new Jewish Publication Society version was issued in 1917, it was the only source from which many Jews not conversant with Hebrew derived their knowledge of the Bible in accordance with Jewish tradition" (Waxman, History of Jewish Literature, 1090). "Leeser's literary magnum opus and most lasting contribution to Judaism in America was an English translation of the Hebrew Bible (1853-54) complete with 'short explanatory notes' . Leeser's Bible, as it has come to be known, quickly became 'the standard bible for English speaking Jews, especially in America.'" (Sussman). Leeser's first biblical translation was his The Law of God, published in five small-format volumes in 1845, with vocalized Hebrew text of each of the Five Books of Moses, together with an English translation and notes, as well as the haftarot. His larger-format Bible of 1853-54 comprised a new English translation of the full "Tanakh," revising his earlier translation of the Pentateuch and translating the remaining parts between April 1852 and September 1853. The first edition would be published shortly thereafter, with a second edition in 1859 and subsequent quarto editions thereafter. This copy with esteemed early American Jewish provenance to Benjamin Franklin Peixotto (18341890) and his descendants. Peixotto was the grandson of Benjamin Mendes Seixas (17471817) one of the founders of the New York Stock Exchange, the brother of hazzan Gershom Seixas, and among the notable early members of Congregation Shearith Israel. Peixotte married Hannah Straus (aka Strauss) of Louisville Kentucky in 1858. He worked as a journalist in Cleveland Ohio, and there founded the Hebrew Benevolent Society and a chapter of B'nai B'rith. In 1866 he moved with his family to New York, working as a lawyer, then in 1870, he became American consul first to Romania, then in 1877 to Lyon, France. The translator, Rabbi Isaac Leeser (1806?1868), was the head rabbi of the Synagogue Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia, where he became America's most prolific Jewish writer. He compiled a Hebrew reader and Jewish catechism and also edited The Occident, the first Jewish periodical in America. Leeser's translation of the Pentateuch was published at his own expense in 1845?1846, and the complete Bible was published for the first time in 1854. .Abraham de Sola (1825-1882) was a renowned rabbi, scholar, and lecturer whose popularity went far beyond the bounds of McGill or Montreal. Born in London to a prominent Sephardic Jewish family, he gained recognition at a very young age for his writings on Eastern languages and literature, as well as on Jewish history and scripture. In 1847, at only twenty-two years of age, he moved to Canada to become the Rabbi of the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish Congregation of Montreal, a community he continued to serve for thirty years. In 1853, McGill invited de Sola to become Professor of Hebrew and Oriental Literature, and later also appointed him Lecturer in Spanish Literature. The great popularity of his lectures is perhaps best demonstrated by an extraordinary invitation in 1872: he traveled to Washington, D.C. to deliver the prayer which opened that year's session of the United States Congress. He was the first non-Christian theologian to perform this ceremony, and his speech was very well received.

Indeed, in the early 19th century, most American Jews couldn't read the Bible because they were not literate in Hebrew and an adequate English translation didn't exist. Isaac Leeser's "The Twenty-Four Books of the Holy Scriptures," first published in 1854, attempted to fill this need. Soon after its publication, this work became the standard for American Jews not conversant in Hebrew as well as an important contribution to Jewish American culture. Leeser spent 17 years on this landmark translation, relying almost exclusively on Jewish scholarship. This rare third edition is a large-size illustrated version that was sold door-to-door. It contains 9 tissue-guarded steel engravings from celebrated paintings, including: Philippe de Champagne's "Moses Presenting the Tablets of the Law" (Frontispiece); J. Clark's "Hagar and Ishmael"; Dobson's "Happy Days of Job" and 13 photomechanical reproductions of illustrations by Gustave Doré. A prolific and ambitious religious leader, Isaac Leeser had a "monumental" impact on the American Jewish community (ANB). He elevated the status of Jewish religious leaders, advocated for Jewish day schools, and helped to established Maimonides College, the first rabbinical school in the United States. He also taught and published extensively in vernacular English and organized the first American Jewish Publication Society in 1845, making Jewish scriptures andreligious education texts broadly accessible to Anglophone Jews. The Leeser Bible was first published in 1853-54, at a time when many Anglophone Jews had to read the Hebrew Bible in the King James Version of the Hebrew Bible; Leeser provided a translation free of the influence of American Christianity. His translation "remained the standard Jewish translation of the Bible in North America for over 60 years" (Fischel & Pinsker, Jewish-American History and Culture, p.349). This copy from the 1858-9 second edition, with an extended nineteenth- and twentieth-century provenance. The family record at the rear lists births, deaths, and marriages of the Alexander-Steiger-Freeman-Gombrich family from the 1850s through the 1880s, in both English and Hebrew. Also with the bookplate and stamps of the Jewish Cultural Reconstruction, a short-lived organization founded by Salo Baron (and assisted by Hannah Arendt) that collected and redistributed heirless Jewish property from Germany in the wake of WWII.
