A Limited Edition of 600 copies published in hardback, one hundred of which were signed and numbered by Colin Wilson. This is one of the 500 unsigned copies. ***Very good in light brown textured cloth-covered boards with black titles to the front board. The very thin boards are nice and straight (the book is prone to warped boards). No bumps, No wear. Boards nice and clean and unmarked. No inscriptions. Some light foxing to the front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour printed dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, but is unpriced. Edges of dustwrapper slightly rubbed. The white background is slightly marked, mainly on the front panel [see scans]. No tears. No loss. No creasing. ***210mm x 210mm square format. 20 pages. ***'More than a decade after its original publication, Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" became a bestseller on American campuses, and Gandalf shared with Che Guevara the dubious honour of being the hero of a new generation of students. Professor Tolkien is not just a teller of fairy tales; his philosophy of traditionalism and classicism is reminiscent of T. S. Eliot. Yet apart from a dismissive essay by Edmund Wilson, there has been very little serious literary criticism of Tolkien and his creative universe. This short book by Colin Wilson represents an attempt by an English critic to assess Tolkien as a writer and thinker. It examines some of the little known essays and stories as well as "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings"'. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***'Colin Wilson was born in Leicester in 1931, the son of a boot and shoe operative. An early interest in science developed in his teens into an interest in literature and philosophy; the result was that in his early twenties he worked simultaneously on his book Ritual in the Dark and the philosophical book The Outsider, both of which were to become bestsellers. Although he came to prominence in 1956, and was labelled an "angry young man", he certainly has almost nothing in common with such contemporaries as John Osborne and Kingsley Amis. His work belongs to the European tradition of existentialism that runs from Goethe to Sartre and Heidegger. This is perhaps the reason that critics in England and America have found his approach somewhat difficult to assimilate, while in France, Germany, Spain and many other foreign countries he is regarded as the foremost writer of his generation. ***He regards his philosophical task as the creation of a bridge between Husserl's phenomenology and Wittgenstein's linguistic "Outsider" series, which attempt to outline a new post-Sartre existentialism. He has written six novels, four plays, a volume on Rasputin and a book on music, Brandy of the Damned.' ***First impression of the true first edition - published as a Limited Edition of just 600 copies. Uncommon. Of interest to collectors of the work of Colin Wilson and J. R. R. Tolkien. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
