Erstausgabe
First editions, first impressions, Scenery number 255 of 500, Life number 276 of 400, and Travel number 107 of 400 copies only. Together, they represent the complete catalogue of one of the largest and most important private collections of its time assembled in the UK. Abbey's "colour-plate collection showed genuine originality and his catalogues represented real advances of knowledge" (ODNB). The art historian Alpheus Hyatt Mayor described Abbey's (1894-1969) huge undertaking as "the greatest book catalogue that any private collector has issued for a very long time" and they remain the core reference works for the study of colour-plate books printed in England from the late 18th- to the mid-19th centuries. The bulk of Abbey's library was sold by Sotheby's from 1966 to 1970. Apheus Hyatt Mayor, book review in The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, vol. 51, 1 Jan. 1957, pp. 177-8. 3 works in Four volumes, large quarto. Original greyish brown cloth, spines with red labels, top edges gilt. With dust jackets. Scenery: 35 collotype plates; Life in England: 33 collotype plates; Travel: 37 collotype plates. Frontispieces and title pages printed in colour. Further illustrations in the text. Rubbing to bottom edges, toning to outer leaves and margins, a couple of leaves neatly marked up in pencil, vol. II of Travel with a couple of edge bumps and creased terminal leaves; jackets rubbed, soiled, and slightly chipped, long closed tear at foot of Scenery spine, Life with puncturing at rear spine fold, all jackets remaining sound and unclipped: a very good set in like jackets.
