First edition in English, with the publisher's catalogue dated 1929. This also marked the first edition in book form, following initial publication in German the previous year in the journal Annalen der Naturphilosophie. That publication - under the title Logisch-Philosophische Abhandlung - was plagued with errors, to the extent that Wittgenstein told a friend that he regarded it as a "pirated edition" (Monk, p. 205). Wittgenstein corrected the text for this edition, which prints the original German parallel with the English translation by Charles Kay Ogden and Frank Plumpton Ramsey. It was the only philosophical work by Wittgenstein to be published in his lifetime, save for a short lecture printed in the Aristotelian Society journal in 1929. The cornerstone text of Logical Positivism and of the Cambridge school of analytic philosophy, the Tractatus articulates the relationship of language and reality, and defines the limits of science. Now universally recognized as one of the philosophical masterpieces of the 20th century, the work was far from an overnight success. Only some copies of the first edition sheets were bound and issued upon publication. Slow sales of these copies delayed the binding and distribution of the remaining sheets, which were instead bound in stages over the next several years, as demand required. These copies had new publisher's catalogues inserted, distinguishing them from the first issued copies without such catalogues. Lapoint, Ludwig Wittgenstein: A Comprehensive Bibliography, p. 4. Blackwell & Ruja (Russell's introduction) B11.1a. See Ray Monk, Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius, 2012. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Parallel text in German and English. Minor wear to spine ends, head of front joint splitting, corners rubbed. Cloth faded, spine irregularly so. Occasional very light spotting, one or two instances of pencil annotation or marginalia; a very good copy.

Erstausgabe
First edition, first impression, of the original publication of Wittgenstein's draft of the Tractatus. The front free endpaper of this copy is inscribed "property of J. P. Griffin". James Patrick Griffin (1933-2019) worked as Professor of Moral Philosophy at Oxford; in 1965, he published Wittgenstein's logical atomism, a work which examines the metaphysical aspects of the Tractatus. The Prototractatus manuscript was discovered in 1965 in Vienna by G. H. von Wright, Wittgenstein's successor as Professor of Philosophy at Cambridge. The manuscript contains 30 remarks and six unnumbered paragraphs not found in the published Tractatus. This edition features a photographic facsimile of the manuscript and a transcription of the original German with facing English translation. Frongia & McGuinness, p. 42; Lapointe, p. 8. Square octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, red silk bookmarker. With dust jacket. Text in German and English. Light bumping and rubbing to extremities; sunning and light chipping to jacket spine and edges, not price-clipped: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First edition. 6 vol. 8vo. [11], 12-543, [5]; [8], 9-347, [5]; [4], 5-265, [3]; [4], 5-490, [2]; [8], 9-429, [1], [1] (page of publisher's advertisements), [1]; [4], 5-445, [3] pp. Red cloth with black lettering blocked in white on the spines; grey topstains. Text in German. With a few in-text diagrams, some in color. Edited by Rush Rhees, B.F. McGuinness, G.E.M. Anscombe, and G.H. Von Wright. With a postcard from the publisher laid in volume two. Biggs and Pichler 12-13. Lapointe 7-8. Volume six of Schriften was published several years after Oxford published Wittgenstein's Remarks on Mathematics, and this set offers its version of that work as a revised and expanded one. There were two additional volumes of Schriften issued after volume six both of which are lacking here (volume 7 is the Lectures on the Foundations of Mathematics, and volume 8 is Remarks on the Philosophy of Psychology). Given that the books were issued over the course of several decades in relatively small quantities, a complete set of first printings in collectible condition is uncommon. The volumes in our set include many of Wittgenstein's principal writings: Philosophical Investigations, Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics, Notebooks, the Tractatus, and more. A very attractive set of the majority of Wittgenstein's corpus in its original language. A tiny ink notation on each front flyleaf, the pageblock on volume five somewhat toned; volume three's jacket has a touch of foxing to its reverse and the jacket on volume six has a tiny split to its front fold.
