Volume six of Schriften was published several years after Oxford published Wittgenstein's Remarks on Mathematics, and this set offers its version of that work as a revised and expanded one. There were two additional volumes of Schriften issued after volume six both of which are lacking here (volume 7 is the Lectures on the Foundations of Mathematics, and volume 8 is Remarks on the Philosophy of Psychology). Given that the books were issued over the course of several decades in relatively small quantities, a complete set of first printings in collectible condition is uncommon. The volumes in our set include many of Wittgenstein's principal writings: Philosophical Investigations, Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics, Notebooks, the Tractatus, and more. A very attractive set of the majority of Wittgenstein's corpus in its original language. A tiny ink notation on each front flyleaf, the pageblock on volume five somewhat toned; volume three's jacket has a touch of foxing to its reverse and the jacket on volume six has a tiny split to its front fold.

Das Manuskript enthält 30 Bemerkungen und sechs nicht nummerierte Absätze, die im veröffentlichten Tractatus nicht zu finden sind. Diese Ausgabe enthält ein fotografisches Faksimile des Manuskripts und eine Transkription des deutschen Originals mit gegenüberliegender englischer Übersetzung. First edition, first impression, of the original publication of Wittgenstein's draft of the Tractatus. The front free endpaper of this copy is inscribed "property of J. P. Griffin". James Patrick Griffin (1933-2019) worked as Professor of Moral Philosophy at Oxford; in 1965, he published Wittgenstein's logical atomism, a work which examines the metaphysical aspects of the Tractatus. The Prototractatus manuscript was discovered in 1965 in Vienna by G. H. von Wright, Wittgenstein's successor as Professor of Philosophy at Cambridge. The manuscript contains 30 remarks and six unnumbered paragraphs not found in the published Tractatus. This edition includes a photographic facsimile of the manuscript and a transcription of the original German with facing English translation. Frongia & McGuinness, p. 42; Lapointe, p. 8. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt (partial offsetting to endpapers, neat ink inventory number to front pastedown, near contemporary 'Woodbrooke Library' label and later 'Discarded by Woodbrooke Library' rubber stamp to front free endpaper, just a hint of faint spotting to title page, otherwise internally clean and unmarked; the cloth has benefitted from sympathetic conservation under our direction, restoration to tips of spine with loss to two characters in the imprint at foot, removal of old library label from spine leaving faint trace of residue, lower corners only slightly rubbed, still a very good copy, albeit modestly sophisticated). Originally published in German the preceding year in the journal Annalen der Naturphilosophie under the title Logisch-Philosophische Abhandlung, this edition has the English translation facing the original German text. Wittgenstein had been unable to make corrections to the original German edition, and this English-German edition, with the translation supplied by C. K. Ogden and Frank Plumpton Ramsey, is considered the official version. The rare first issue, without the publisher's advertisements at the rear. The book was slow to sell and accordingly the loose sheet of the first edition were only bound up as required, hence later issues of the first edition are often encountered with substantially later advertisement's bound at the rear.
