In 1973 both Twentieth Century-Fox and Warner Brothers had each purchased rights to similar skyscraper disaster novels, when "Master of Disaster" producer, Irwin Allen, on the heels success with his 1972 disaster film, "The Poseiden Adventure," convinced both studios to join forces in the production of a motion picture, the first in the history of the major studios. The result was one of the highest grossing films of 1975 and one of the largest ensemble casts yet assembled, including Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, Susan Blakely, Richard Chamberlain, O.J. Um dies herauszufinden, werden exemplarisch drei Filme ausgewählt, da sie drei verschiedene Arten von Katastrophen behandeln: THE TOWERING INFERNO (FLAMMENDES INFERNO; USA 1974), AIRPORT (USA 1970) und EARTHQUAKE (ERDBEBEN; USA 1974). Die Hausarbeit hat zum Ziel, die Betrachtungswürdigkeit dieses Genres für die Filmwissenschaft offenzulegen, damit es nicht mehr hinter seiner kommerziellen Fassade verschwindet. Zu Beginn der Hausarbeit wird der Katastrophenfilm generell definiert und skizzenhaft seine historische Entwicklung von den Anfängen des Bewegtbildes bis heute dargestellt. Danach werden kurz die Inhalte der Filme erläutert. Anschließend werde ich mich damit auseinandersetzen, wer die Akteure des Todes sind, da dieser Sachverhalt nicht so eindeutig ist, wie es die Filme auf den ersten Blick vermitteln mögen. Des Weiteren wird beleuchtet, wie im Zuge des fiktiven und spektakulären Katastrophenszenarios der Tod (von Figuren) dargestellt oder gerade nicht dargestellt und welches Bild von Tod dabei den ZuschauerInnen vermittelt wird. Der Tod war im amerikanischen Kino der 1960er und 1970er Jahre allgegenwärtig. Es war die Zeit des New Hollywoods. In BONNIE AND CLYDE (BONNIE UND CLYDE; USA 1967) werden die beiden titelgebenden Protagonisten im Finale des Films, das wie ein Todesballett anmutet, von hunderten Kugeln in Zeitlupe erschossen. Und in TAXI DRIVER (USA 1976) begibt sich Travis Bickle (Robert DeNiro) auf einen mörderischen Vergeltungszug. Doch parallel lief in den Kinos etwas, mit dem man in dieser Zeit vielleicht nicht rechnen würde: teure High-Concept-Filme mit Starbesetzung und Spezialeffekt-Exzessen, welche die heutigen Blockbuster schon vorwegzu-nehmen schienen. Die 1970er Jahre waren ebenso die Hochphase der Katastrophenfilme. Zwar wurden sie aufgrund ihrer Machart, die schon von Zeitgenossen als altmodisch wahrgenommen wurde, als Gegenentwurf zu New Hollywood gesehen. Dennoch war der Tod ebenfalls in ihnen omnipräsent.
