First Edition of this work issued as a celebration of the newly completed Grand Union Canal. 8vo: viii,147,[5] pp, with hand-colored frontispiece and 23 full-page hand-colored plates "of great topographical interest" (Hardie; according to Abbey, some copies were issued uncolored). Full period black straight-grain morocco, spine elaborately tooled gilt in six compartments, boards tooled in blind and gilt, turn-ins gilt, all edges gilt. A Very Good or better copy, the plates clean and bright, with sporadic, mostly marginal (occasionally heavy) foxing to text. The Grand Junction Canal's 93 miles of waterway, from Braunston in Northhamptonshire to the River Thames at Brentford, was designed to facilitate water transport to London as an alternative to the uncertain Thames. By 1790, an extensive network of canals was in place in the Midlands, but the only route to London was via the Oxford Canal to the Thames, then down the river to the capital. The River Thames, particularly its upper reaches, suffered from shallow sections and shortages of water leading to delays at locks. The mainline (there were numerous branches) of the Grand Junction Canal, built between 1793 and 1805, by-passed the upper Thames and shortened the journey to London. Hassell, a watercolorist and engraver, first appeared as an exhibitor at the Royal Academy in 1789, with a "View of Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain." John Hassell, biographer of George Morland and a drawing master, was the author of several books on watercolour drawing and was a pioneer in the use of aquatint engraving for book illustration. He was also a publisher and printseller specialising in small guidebooks illustrated with his own drawings reproduced as miniature aquatints, hand-coloured. His favourite subjects were views in the Home Counties. 'This is a book of considerable interest now that canals are now no longer what they once were, the highways both of commerce and pleasure' (Prideaux). First edition of Hassell's illustrated travelogue exploring the route of the Grand Junction Canal, built from 1793 to 1805 between Northamptonshire and London, including 24 hand-coloured engravings showing views along the canal. Canals were a recent innovation in the British countryside; Hassell's work reflects the growing public interest in the new system of transport engendered by the Industrial Revolution. Hassell (1767-1825) was a watercolour artist and engraver, who produced a number of illustrated guidebooks to the English countryside, and also wrote a number of technical books on painting and drawing. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1789 and 1819, and was known for his work depicting houses, castles, and cities alongside his topographical illustrations. Octavo (225 x 145 mm). Contemporary green half calf, red calf spine label, floral decorations to compartments in gilt, raised gilt-lined bands, marbled sides, endpapers, and edges, brown silk bookmarker.
