kart. / Paperback. Zustand: Gut. LXVIII, 346 Seiten / p., Abb. Sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - INTRODUCTION -- THIS PRESENT VOLUME is the third in a series that was started in the year 2000 and is another of our efforts to extend the value of the unique resource that is the Index of Christian Art. Throughout the eight…y-nine years of its existence, the Index has made valiant efforts to externalize its holdings and scholarship beyond its home in Princeton University. Our hope is that this volume will engage a youthful audience and show them the wealth of material to be found, while also assisting the more established scholar and providing a useful reference tool. -- Once again it was with great difficulty that we had to decide what to publish in this volume. It could have literally been any of the twentyseven thousand subject headings used in the archive. This present extract is devoted to the concept of time in the Middle Ages, or at least one aspect of its recording, and merges the files on signs of the zodiac and the occupations of the months. Although these subjects have been extensively studied in the past, no such list as this exists, and we hope that this will provide the basis for future research. -- These records will be extended as the Index catalogues more material of this nature - indeed the publication of this volume was delayed on so many occasions as we added new data that we eventually decided with reluctance to proceed with publication of what we had compiled. Once we had decided on the subject matter, minor difficulties arose as to how to arrange it: alphabetically, or in terms of natural narrative sequence. We have opted for the latter and interspersed the months along with the signs. We hope that this sequence provides more structure to the natural order and enables the reader to see each month in its entirety. ISBN 9780976820239 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 846.

In-8, cloth binding, dust jacket, LXVIII-346 pp, numerous illustrations, bibliogr., index. The measurement and documentation of time has been a universal issue since the dawn of civilization--and no more so than in the medieval period, when images representing the signs of the zodiac and occupations of the months were commonly u…sed. Nature and the occupations or labors that each month brought were reflected in earthly calendars, while the movements of the heavens and their impact on mankind were recorded in the signs of the zodiac. The changing compositions that were used to represent these twin calendars in several hundred works of art are documented in this volume, which provides an unrivaled visual record for the student and scholar. /S32-33 Perfect condition.
