Opvallend aan de verfilmingen is dat, ook al baseren ze zich op exact hetzelfde script, in de ene film Judas verheerlijkt wordt en in de andere film wordt Judas verdoemd. Dit zette mij aan het denken over de schuldvraag van Judas. Judas wordt gezien als één van de grootste schurken uit de geschiedenis. Dit beeld is door de vroege Kerk geschetst en vervolgens jarenlang door de Kerk ondersteund. In tegenstelling tot de beulen van Christus is Judas nooit vergeven door de Kerk. Waarom is deze man verdoemd In mijn paper zal ik betogen dat Judas niet als de verrader van Jezus Christus gezien moet worden. Allereerst zal ik de twee versies van 'Jesus Christ Superstar' introduceren en hierbij bijzonder ingaan op de wijze waarop Judas wordt neergezet. Vervolgens zal ik verschillende argumenten aandragen waaruit blijkt, dat Judas niet eenzijdig als verrader beschouwt kan worden. Ook zal ik kort aanstippen wat een reden kan zijn waarom Judas als 'slechterik' is neergezet. Tenslotte trek ik hieruit mijn conclusie. De titel van elk onderwerp is direct ontleend aan liedteksten uit de musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. In de bijlage zijn deze titels, indien relevant, in een bredere context na te lezen. Ook andere liedteksten waaraan ik refereer, zijn in de bijlage terug te vinden.
