In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book, originally published in 1974 by Little, Brown and Company, is a sweeping reexamination of the economic foundations of American Negro slavery. Based upon a vast research effort, this volume constitutes an entirely new portrayal of slavery's past. It challenges traditional assumptions about the material condition and management of slaves, their work habits, domestic welfare, and the economy of the antebellum South in general. In an Afterword added in 1989, the authors assess their findings in the light of recent scholarship and debate. Owner's Name inside. 306 pages.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, inscribed by Fogel on the front free endpaper of each volume, "with best wishes Robert Fogel 7/12/01". The recipient was his colleague, the University of Chicago economics professor Roman Weil. In 1993, Fogel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for this work, which controversially applied empirical data analysis to challenge the established understanding of American slavery. Fogel and Engerman "contended that slavery had not been, as widely portrayed, an inefficient system destined for collapse, with slaves living in virtual concentration camps and worked to death. Rather, after studying medical records, cotton yields and other data, the authors argued that slavery had been highly efficient in utilizing economies of scale and that plantation owners had regarded workers as economic assets whom they were inclined to treat at least as well as livestock. This tended to limit exploitation, Professor Fogel and his colleague found, declaring, in fact, that slave life in the South was generally better than that of industrial workers in the North. An intellectual firestorm resulted" (New York Times obituary, 11 June 2013). Roman L. Weil (1940-2023) was professor of accounting at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business from 1965 until 2008; Fogel worked at the university from 1964 until 1975, and from 1981 until his death in 2013. Weil was the coauthor of several textbooks, including the highly regarded Accounting: The Language of Business (1974), as well as over one hundred journal articles and notes. He developed the widely used Fisher-Weil measure of bond duration. 2 vols, octavo. Original brown cloth, spines lettered in gilt. With dust jackets. Unclipped jackets with a few minor nicks and light creasing at extremities, spine panels very lightly sunned: fine copies in very good jackets.
