Planter with a strip of sunning along the upper edge of the front board, and a tender front hinge. A little tanned generally, with the odd foxed leaf, but altogether unusually clean. Armorial bookplate of James Whiting Yorke to the front free end-paper of each volume. With the loss of its richly-wooded American colonies at the end of the XVIIIc, Great Britain turned once again to forest-management on its own shores in a way it hadn't in more than a century. The planting of trees for timber was a matter of national security and prosperity, but it also became a subject of aristocratic pride; since only substantial estates could grow large forests, dendrological dominance became the sport of dukes. One of the greatest was the Duke of Bedford at Woburn Abbey; his Pinetum Woburnense (of which Arader has handled two important association copies) catalogues his collection of coniferous trees. William Pontey, of whom nothing outside his publications is known, boasts of working for the fifth duke (Francis Russell) as well as his brother, John Russell the sixth duke. A Yorkshire-born nurseryman, he began publishing his knowledge of trees from 1796 with the first edition of The profitable planter. Of this new edition Pontey in the preface writes "thought the present is called a second edition, it may be considered as nearly a new work; the former being chiefly devoted to the cultivation of Larch, and Scotch Fir; and hence, though most of the sentiments are retained, a regard to method, has rendered it necessary to write most of the work anew." The forest pruner, first published 1805, was brought out in a second edition in 1808, doubtless occasioning the revision. The Pruner is particularly sought for its colored sections of various types of timber, indicating their properties. James Whiting Yorke (1796/7-1854) matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford in 1815, and it is perhaps there that he acquired the set. Yorke -- who served as High Sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1849 -- is principally remembered for his connection to Charles Darwin: Yorke sold his 325 acre (132 hectare) Beesby Farm to Darwin's father Robert, who in turn transferred it to the great naturalist. Yorke, as a letter of 1859 records, continued to shoot at the property, and so perhaps the two knew each other.

Leeds, T. Inchbold, 1826. 8vo (23.2 x 14.2 cm). xxiii, 248, vii, [iv] pp.; nine engraved plates. Original blind boards. Spine with original printed label. = A seldom-seen presentation copy, to P. Wormald (?) Esq., signed by the author with inscription on title, dated 1827. First published in 1805 it was very successful. This edition is the updated and expanded fourth, which is definitely much less common than the first three editions. Slight wear to boards, spine cover abraded at to end, the front board near-detached; otherwise a very good, clean copy.
