Or, la destruction de ces animaux dérégla totalement le régime des eaux que les barrages, qu'ils construisaient auparavant sur les rivières, régularisaient tout comme le font des ouvrages d'art que l'on construit dans ce but dans nos régions. Quand Éric Collier, l'auteur de ce livre, s'établit dans un district de la Colombie britannique, il y trouva une nature désolée, des forêts toujours menacées par des incendies, des prairies sans herbe : bref, une région en train de mourir. Seul, sans autre conseil que celui d'une vieille Indienne qui lui vantait l'ancienne prospérité du pays, sans autre aide que celle de sa femme, Collier se mit à reconstituer d'anciens barrages de castors. Les résultats ne se firent pas attendre longtemps : lentement, la région renaissait à la vie. Mais ce n'est que lorsque le gouvernement canadien eut mis à sa disposition quelques couples de castors que la vraie prospérité vint s'y installer. Ces animaux industrieux devinrent de précieux auxiliaires pour la construction des barrages et pour l'aménagement de la contrée.
