Le portrait occupe une place fondamentale dans l'?uvre de Thomas Couture qui lègue à la postérité le visage du Tout-Paris de la fin de la Monarchie de juillet et des débuts du Second Empire. Thomas Couture est considéré, à travers ses grandes compositions historiques et allégoriques, comme l'un des meilleurs représentants de l'éclectisme qui se fait jour dans la création artistique au milieu du XIXe siècle. A moins de trente ans, avant même de triompher au Salon de 1847 avec Les Romains de la décadence (Paris, musée d'Orsay), celui qui deviendra le maître de Manet réalise plusieurs effigies monumentales de personnalités du monde politique, artistique et intellectuel. A la fin des années 1850, il se retire dans sa ville natale, Senlis, puis à Villiers-le-Bel. Ses proches l'inspirent désormais dans des portraits beaucoup plus libres qui annoncent, à leur manière, l'impressionnisme. Cadrage large ou serré sur les bustes et les visages, superbe rendu des expressions, la maîtrise de Thomas Couture nous invite à percer les secrets des attitudes et des regards de ses modèles, solennels, rêveurs ou intimes.
