Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First American Edition. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, fading to a postcard-size rectangular area on the front cover, one-time owner's extensive ink notes on the front endpaper (name, date & place of purchase, brief note about references within to a specific hotel in Edinburgh), vintage books…eller's label (Bullocks Book Shop, Los Angeles) on rear pastedown]. Mystery novel (subtitled, in its original British edition, "a romance of high hazard"), the first by this Canadian-born author and journalist (1892-1989) of Scottish descent. Sometimes writing under the pseudonym "Austin Moore," he turned out about twenty mysteries, mostly between 1925 and 1940, while also authoring numerous historical and biographical works, mostly on Scottish subjects. A contemporary reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle was gently dismissive of the book: "A husky, adventurous young man comes into an unexpected inheritance, which includes an ancestral hall [in Scotland] full of hostile spirits. He is warned, of course. The heroes of these mystery tales always are -- but do they sell the shack and live in comfort in London on the proceeds? Rather not; that would end the story at Chapter III. So Ronny Drysdale and his bosom friend dash off to Brackenridge Hall to take possession, and, of course, are shot at, clouted over the head, and generally misused through many mildly exciting chapters.".
