A very good copy indeed of the author's scarce third collection of ghost stories.

First edition of James's third short story collection, containing five "excellent stories" (Bleiler). Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) is widely regarded as the father of the modern ghost story. A medieval scholar and librarian, he began writing ghost stories at Cambridge and became known for his candlelit readings. He continued the tradition when he left his role as Vice-Chancellor in 1918 to become Provost of Eton. Bleiler 913. Octavo.
