In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: very good. First edition. Catalog that accompanied a seminal exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1968. René d'Harnoncourt, then director of the MoMA had the idea for an exhibition of kinetic art but this idea was soon extended to new dimensions to an overview of the history of machines within an artistic context. Each of them is displayed on a single page with extensive black and white imagery. Starting of with earliest depictions of machines by Dürer, da Vinci and contemporaries, all the way through with Robert Beer's kinetic plastic sheet continiously changing its shape by different, indiscernible mechanisms. and Wen-Ying Tsai's "cybernetic" sculpture projecting onto ocillating rods. Hardcover with silkscreened tin covers, with raised and painted illustration on front. Covers are bound by three rivets and nine small hinges for front and rear covers. Spine has started to tarnish; there is mild rubbing to covers. Better than usual overall condition. 6" - 8½". book.

Published in conjunction with an exhibition which was shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City from November 25, 1968 to February 9, 1969, and subsequently toured to Houston and San Francisco."Historically machines have often been regarded as toys, or agents of magic, marvel, and fantasy. The story of how artists in this century have looked upon and interpreted machines is highly dramatic. Their attitudes have ranged from deepest despair to devotion and even idolatry. It should be noted that such extreme positions have been taken by artists who are among the most significant of our time." [From the introduction by K. G. Pontus Hulten].

Aluminum rear cover and spine oxidized with scratching, light edge foxing, otherwise light wear; Mailer tone with soiling. Crisp hardcover three post metal binder. ; "Swedish art collector and curator K. G. Pontius Hultén curated and wrote the catalogue for The Machine as Seen at the End of the Mechanical AgeOffsite Link, an exhibition at The Museum of Modern ArtOffsite Link, New York, from November 27, 1968 to February 9, 1969. This was a landmark exhibition on the history of the machine in its relationship to art from the Renaissance to 1968; or as the editor stated, it was "a collection of comments on technology by artists of the Western world" (p. 3). The art reproduced and described in the catalogue including much that was radical for its timewas mainly in traditional media such as prints or paintings, sculptural or mechanical, with a few electro-mechanical items, and one example of laser art. Only the last two items in the exhibition were examples of computer graphics . The design and production of the catalogue was unusually excellent, including a very striking binding of aluminum sheeting with a stamped enamel-painted design of the MOMA building on the upper cover." - Jeremy Norman's History of Information.
