Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Charles O'Neill was a chemist interested in the dyeing and printing of fabrics, the dyes and mordants used and the chemistry involved. He was active in the period just after the discovery of coal-tar dyes by William Perkin in 1856 and before they had entered the mass market, so his main emphasis was on natural dyes. He had written "A Dictionary of Dyeing and Calico Printing" in 1862. He started publishing this monthly Textile Colourist in 1876 aimed at bringing European innovations to the GB industry. These two volumes contain all the published editions of the journal. They contain numerous folding plates and tipped in original fabric samples, all present here. It has been described as follows: "Another excellent example of a journal that reflected the vitality of the 'Republic of chemist-dyers' even in the period of the emergence of artificial dyes. Four volumes appeared between 1876 and 1877, and included a variety of foreign innovations and patents, historical accounts, prizes to encourage innovations in Mulhouse and Rouen, collections of foreign printed swatches, and numerous translations and summaries of foreign papers on the art of dyeing and printing, mainly with natural dyestuffs". (Augusti Nieto-Galan, Colouring Textiles, 2001). O'Neill's 1877 book "The Practice and Principles of Calico Printing, Bleaching, Dyeing etc) was originally published, in parts, as a supplement to this journal. The Textile Colourist was merged into The Textile Manufacturer at the end of 1887, to which O'Neill then contributed a monthly article: "The Textile Colourist". Bound in contemporary half calf, with raised gilt bands and large gilt labels. Marbled page edges. Brief pencilled notes on the front endpapers of each volume, otherwise A VERY GOOD copy.
