In den WarenkorbUnbound. Zustand: Near Fine. Four small panoramic pictorial photographs measuring 3.5" x 10" with captions in the negative and handwritten on the verso. About near fine with some toning and small creases. The images depicted the Silver Service presentation ceremony for the USS *Texas* on November 7, 1914 in Galveston, Texas. Thi…s trip was the ship's only visit to Texas as an active duty US Navy ship. Each postcard features a lengthy inscription by "Emmet" detailing the event. One of the photos is of Father Kirwin speaking on board the ship which reads, "Father Kirwin spoke on "Texas" for half an hour and held the undivided attention of those who heard him." Kirwin was the vicar general for the Galveston diocese and was later the Chaplin for the Texas National Guard. One photo showing the ship's captain reads, "Captain Grant in his speech of acceptance talked to the school children rather than to their elders in simple language that was readily understood by the little ones. He told of his visits to others ports and to school children in foreign lands. Frequently he was interrupted by the laughter or applause of his audience." The other two scenes show the young son of the mayor presenting the service and the governor "addressing the school children of Texas." Emmet writes, "He said it is the pleasure of Texas to have the greatest ship of the navies of the world named for our Lone Star State, and to have her in one of the greatest harbours of the world. Hurrah!" The USS Texas served in Mexican waters during the Mexican Revolution after an incident between the US Navy and the Mexican Federal Army. During World War I she was sent to the North Sea and was later used in World War II as an escort ship. *Texas* was the only ship to be involved in the Normandy Landingsas well as the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
