Surveys in the summers of 1977 (8 locs) and 1978-1979 (111 locs) on 17 islands in the Faroes yielded 20 species (9 slugs and 11 snails) of terrestrial gastropods. Punctum pygmaeum Draparnaud was recorded for the first time and the total number of species known from the Faroes is now 20. All Faroese species also occur in the neighbouring areas (i. e. Scotland, Orkneys, Shetland, Iceland, and Western Norway) with a few minor exceptions. Many of the species (especially the slugs) have wide distributions and are relatively abundant in the Faroes (10 species were found on > 15 islands and 5 species on 8-13 islands). The remaining exhibit relatively broad habitat niches, though many show an association with man-made habitats and may have been introduced by man. Data on numbers, habitat distribution, and distribution maps for the Faroes are given for all species. 14 pp., 20 maps, gr. 8.

Electrophoretic studies of genetic variation in 14 species of terrestrial slugs of the families Arionidae, Philomycidae, and Limacidae in the eastern United States indicate that self-fertilization, either facultative or obligatory, is the normal breeding system in six of the species. Three of these six species are single monogenic strains; one consists of three monogenic strains; one includes a highly heterozygous form and two monogenic strains; and one has a moderate amount of polymorphism but little heterozygosity and strong linkage disequilibrium. Eight species are outcrossers, being highly polymorphic and panmictic within local populations. Niche breadth, assessed in terms of extent of geographic distribution and variety of habitats occupied and measured on an experimental plot of woodland, is greater in some monogenic strains than in highly heterozygous, outcrossing species. Colonizing success apparently is independent of the amount of genetic variation carried by a species. 5 pp., 4.

Ten flexible characters for two collections of a pulmonate land slug that differed in their method of preservation (ethanol or freezer/ethanol), were measured four times twice with calipers and twice with a stage micrometer by two different people. Repeated measurements were used to estimate the measurement error (ME) associated with the ten characters. ME ranged from 2% to 90% and differed significantly between the characters. Characters with low mean values and a high flexibility showed the largest ME. With the stage micrometer, one measurer obtained significantly higher ME, but both measurers obtained the same ME with calipers. There was no detectable effect of preservation method on the size and shape of characters, yet, results differed when characters were measured with either calipers or a stage micrometer. One measurer obtained significantly larger mean values for three characters with calipers. Additionally, presumed species differences between three Carinarion species (Arion fasciatus, A. silvaticus and A. circumscriptus; subgenus Carinarion Hesse 1926) were tested using principal component analysis and canonical discriminant analysis. Despite possible measurer biases and high ME, the different datasets yielded highly similar results, indicating that biometrical data of soft, flexible structures may yield valuable and reliable data which can be examined statistically. Our results indicate that A. fasciatus is larger than the other two species, but it is hard to distinguish from both of the other species when size is not considered. Arion silvaticus and A. circumscriptus can be separated only when colour characters are used. 10 pp., 2 figs, 4.

New and little-known terrestrial slugs are dealt with based on extensive collections made in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda) 19932007. This account deals primarily with larger species from forests in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania. In Veronicellidae, Pseudoveronicella Germain, 1908 is extended to Tanzania by P. (Hoffmannia) zootoca tanzaniensis subsp. n. in the Udzungwa Mts. In Urocyclidae, Dendrolimax parensis sp. n. is described from the Pare Mts. and Leptichnoides avisexcrementis sp. n. is described from the Uluguru Mts. In Urocyclinae, Tanzalimax tattersfieldi gen. & sp. n. is described from the Usambara Mts., Tanzalimax seddonae gen. & sp. n. from the Uluguru Mts., and Udzungwalimax suminis gen. & sp. n. from the Udzungwa Mts. In addition, the ill-defined genus Atrichotoxon Simroth, 1910 is discussed and the little-known Dendrolimax leprosus Pollonera, 1906 is reported from Uganda. In Agriolimacidae, a species of Deroceras Rafinesque, 1820 is reported for the first time from southern Tanzania. The taxonomic attribution and significance of each discovery is discussed. 32 pp., 75 figs, gr. 8.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In recent years slugs have become increasingly important, partly because several species are agricultural and horticultural pests and partly because theyhave proved to be useful experimental animals, particularly in the field of neurophysiology. Most of the early works which included slugs were essentially taxonomic but the book byTaylor (1902-1907) contained a great deal of biological information about slugs, some of which is still relevant today. The publication of the book by Runham and Hunter (1970) represented a milestone in slug research, providing a comprehensive survey of current knowledge about slugs. The book by Godan (1983) on snailsand slugswas mainly concerned with theeconomic importanceof theseanimals. The purpose of the present book is to present a review of current knowledgeofthebiologyandecologyofslugs, togetherwith theirstatusand control as pests. Although relatively little is known about the biology and ecology of tropical slugs and most information is taken from work on European slugs, the European pest species have become widely distributed throughout temperate regions and this book should be of interest world wide. It is written as a source of information for people seeking to control slug pests and, also, for those wishing to use slugs for research or teaching purposes. The book is intended particularly to provide a starting point for those beginning research on slugs and an extensive bibliography has been provided.

At first sight slugs appear to be improbable land animals, as they have a high water content but no impermeable cuticle; yet they are extremely successful. Their success is due to their considerable adaptability. In this book the authors have attempted to survey the physiology, behaviour, ecology and economic importance of slugs. It was written firstly to provide information for those people seeking to control these important agricultural and horticultural pests. Current trends in agriculture seem likely to make them even more serious pests in the future. It is therefore essential to discover better methods of control. The mode of action of the current molluscidides is largely unknown and therefore their further development is a matter of chance. Perhaps a better understanding of slug physiology, behaviour and ecology will lead to the design of more effective chemical or biological control methods. Secondly, it was hoped that the book would promote the use of slugs in schools and universities as material for research and teaching, where the demand is for animals easily collected in large numbers. Apart from their pest status slugs have an intrinsic biological interest. It is now possible to obtain suitable keys to identify the local species in many parts of the world but it is difficult to find information on their general biology. Most of the work on land molluscs has concentrated on species of the snail Helix and slugs get little mention in general reviews. It therefore seemed that it would be of value to present as full a picture as possible of the life of slugs. In some fields of study where little work has been carried out with slugs, information has had to be included from studies on related molluscs. It is regrettable that little work has been carried out on tropical slugs, so that most of the information utilised here had to be taken from studies on North European species. There is a need for further information at all levels from the simplest natural history to the most sophisticated physiology and ecology, and in all countries. Perhaps it is in the field of taxonomy that work is most urgently required, as this information is the basic for all further work.
