This edition was translated by his son, William Rastell [1508?-1565], who is often listed as its author. First published in 1527, this pioneering dictionary was originally written in Law French with the Latin title Expositiones Terminorum Legum Anglorumae. Quite popular with students and lawyers due to its clarity and concision, it went through at least twenty-five editions by 1721. This edition was reissued in 1742 and again in 1819. This is a revision of Les Termes de la Ley, an alphabetical dictionary of legal terms first compiled in 1527 by John Rastell, the English printer, author, member of parliament, barrister, and brother-in-law of St Thomas More (it is sometimes ascribed, as in the preface to this vol., to Rastell's son William Rastell). This revised version, first published by 1667, is the work of the antiquary and lexicographer Thomas Blount (1618-1679), who was to publish his own 'Nomolexikon?: a Law-Dictionary' in 1670. John Rastell (c. 1475 1536) was an English printer, author, member of parliament, and barrister, a brother-in-law of Sir Thomas More. First translated from French into English in 1527, possibly by Rastell's son William, this first English legal dictionary was reprinted many times.

The pages are slightly tanned to the edges and the top margin is sometimes very close to or just touching,the running headline, but only on page three is the headline cut into. Minimal foxing to beginning and end but all pages unmarked,not torn, and crisp and no loose pages. This is a later edition of the first dictionary of legal terms and is thus in alphabetical order. The first edition was the first Law Dictionary as well as being the first English dictionary and had originally a title in Latin. It went through many editions down to 1821 and now modern day facsimiles. Any 16th century editions are scarce and this edition also seems to be surprisingly hard to find for sale. 1 volume. [iv], 592pp. 8vo. Titlepage trimmed along outer printed border, a few tears to upper margin with the odd one impinging on text, sl. worming to lower margins of initial leaves without loss of text. Overall a nice clean copy. Contemp. full calf; brown morocco label (with sl. loss); some wear to hinges at head and tail, corners bumped with sl, wear. Signature of Mrs Thompson (?) on titlepage. A good plus copy. ESTC T130235, 'first published in 1527 as Expositiones terminorum legum Anglorum'. It first appeared under this title in 1624 and finally in 1742; this was the penultimate edition.

A translation of Expositiones terminorum legum Anglorum, sometimes attributed to John Rastell's son, William, who is usually considered to be the editor or translator. First published in 1523, the book went through 13 editions in the 16th century alone, most of which are rare. It is the first dictionary of English law.
