Les Termes de la Ley: Or, Certain Difficult and Obscure Words and Terms of the Common and Statute Laws of This Realm, Now in Use, Expounded and Explained. Corrected and Enlarged, with the Addition of Many Other Words; Particularly of Those Introduced into the Statute Law of Great Britain, Never Printed in Any Other Impression. Originally published: [London]: Printed by Eliz. Nutt and R. Gosling, 1721. [iv], 592 pp. Reprinted 2006, 2012 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584775478. ISBN-10: 1584775475. Hardcover. New. $49.95 * Last and best edition of the first English law dictionary. Corrected and greatly enlarged with English and Law French in parallel columns. This edition was translated by his son, William Rastell [1508?-1565], who is often listed as its author. First published in 1527, this pioneering dictionary was originally written in Law French with the Latin title Expositiones Terminorum Legum Anglorumae. Quite popular with students and lawyers due to its clarity and concision, it went through at least twenty-five editions by 1721. This edition was reissued in 1742 and again in 1819. As Marvin observes, it is a useful dictionary because it "reflects the common law at the close of the year-book period with much fidelity.": Legal Bibliography (1847) 599.

Royal coat of arms frontis. Parallel Law French / English text. Minor dampstaining to final page of text, which is neatly reinforced with newer paper to top margin with no loss to text. This revised version, first published by 1667, is the work of the antiquary and lexicographer Thomas Blount (1618-1679), who was to publish his own 'Nomolexikon?: a Law-Dictionary' in 1670. With a final page of errata. ESCT R203324. ~Robust packaging. All UK orders trackable, others on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. Hardback. Size: (12), 613, (1)pp.

In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. 8vo [over 7.7 inches] Near contemporary tan leather binding on 5 raised bands with blind ruling + blind decoration along the hinges and gilt dentelles [chipped down to headband or just below at head and foot of spine/lower hinge split to bottom compartment/some wear to edges and tips/ some spotting or marking] titlepage + "to reader" + 556pp +[one blank leaf] Parallel colums of French and English throughout with the English in Black Letter & the french in Roman font. The pages are slightly tanned to the edges and the top margin is sometimes very close to or just touching, the running headline, but only on page three is the headline cut into. Minimal foxing to beginning and end but all pages unmarked, not torn, and crisp and no loose pages. This is a later edition of the first dictionary of legal terms and is thus in alphabetical order. The first edition was the first Law Dictionary as well as being the first English dictionary and had originally a title in Latin. It went through many editions down to 1821 and now modern day facsimiles. Any 16th century editions are scarce and this edition also seems to be surprisingly hard to find for sale. 1 volume. Hardcover.
