In den WarenkorbFirst and sole edition of this salesman's sampler of 87 hand towel designs. There are both modern and traditional patterns, showing cars, pine trees, radios, cherry blossoms, Mt Fuji, puffer fish, and more. Japanese hand towels (tenugui) have been worn since at least the 9th century. However, it was not until the Meiji period that new dyeing techniques allowed for them to be manufactured at higher speed and greater quality. This turned them into a fashion item and a popular gift; as Basil Hall Chamberlain wrote, "Tenugui, as they are both decorative and have many uses, make good gifts. Each year thousands are given as presents across Japan" (Okubo, p. 153). This sample book was produced by a company which specialized in hand towels as advertisements. The verso of the front wrapper reads: "Use them for greetings, announcements, or advertisements; we accommodate everyone's requirements and requests". There follows 87 colour designs advertising watches, cars, music shops, stationery shops, greengrocers, banks, and spas. The rear wrapper has been stamped on the recto and verso by the Marue Dye Company, which still trades to this day. Okubo Naoko, "Edo Tokyo no atsurae tenugui no bunka to 'tugikomi' some no tojo: jukyu seiki zenchuki ni okeru shoki chusen giho to sono haikei", Jinbun Shakai Kagaku Ronso, no. 30, 2021. Oblong folio (186 x 260 mm). With 87 tissue-guarded hand towel designs; text in Japanese. Original brown pictorial paper wrappers, renewed blue thread fukuro-toji binding, spine ends capped in brown paper. Purple ink stamp dated 17 July 1952 to rear wrapper verso. Extremities rubbed, a few black ink marks and a light vertical crease to front wrapper, some marks and foxing internally, some losses to tissue guards: a very good copy.
