FIRST EDITION, a couple of faint spot to prelims, recurrent at rear, pp. 317, crown 8vo, original oatmeal cloth, lettered in black to upper board and backstrip, the latter faintly sunned, edges a little toned, these and endpapers lightly spotted, front pastedown with pencilled ownership inscription, grey printed dustjacket a little chipped and nicked with some faint soiling, very good. Scarce. The Australian author was the younger sister of author Mary Mitchell; this is her only novel. Janet Mitchell, born in Melbourne, studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of London, graduating in 1922; she took on various educational and journalistic positions, along with other work, in Sydney, London, Geneva, Manchester and elsewhere - the present book was written whilst reporting on the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, and set in the region. It carries a printed dedication to her cousin, George Ernest ('Chinese') Morrison, a notable diplomat and collector.
