Scattered foxing and soiling internally, text mostly clean and plates fine; 1976 owner inscription; spine is a bit rubbed with a few tears along the edge and wear to the head. Very Good. Spine and edges slightly faded, couple of marks to rear cover, contents clean and crisp, plates bright, a very good copy in an attractive binding. With 13 tipped-in colour plates, including frontispiece, and black and white illustrations to the text, all by Rackham. First Rackham edition, signed limited issue, number 15 of 525 copies signed by the artist. A publisher's note describes how this collection, "together with the selection we published some years ago. make a total of one hundred stories which include, it is thought, all the best of the Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm" (p. v). Quarto, full olive green cloth with gilt pictorial vignettes and lettering on upper cover and spine, with illustrated endpapers, in the rare pictorially illustrated dustjacket, now housed in a green cloth covered slipcase. xi, 251 pp. A fine and handsome, bright and clean copy of this scarce book, very small jag at the foot of the spine, some of the usual mellowing to the endleaves, the jacket whole, but with some chipping to the rear panel and the spine panel. Still, rare in jacket. FIRST EDITION IN RARE DUSTJACKET. This collection, which includes forty new stories, was designed to form a complementary volume to GRIMM'S FAIRY TALES, which Constable published with Rackham's illustrations in 1909. Signed limited edition, number 271 of 750 copies signed by the artist. Rackham's first edition of the Fairy Tales, published in 1900, is here revised and enlarged with some new illustrations, as well as others redrawn and coloured. Mrs Edgar Lucas, the translator, was born Alice Erichsen, the daughter of Hermann Erichsen, a Danish businessman who had settled first in Newcastle, then in Tooting, where Alice met her husband. She made successful translations from the Danish of Hans Christian Andersen and Henrik Pontoppidan. Her sister was the artist and illustrator Nelly Erichsen (1862-1918). Riall, p. 97.
