Nur für wenige dieser Werke ist der genaue Herkunftsort, geschweige denn der Name des Künstlers bekannt - wie auch für keine Skulptur dieses Katalogs. Es ist längst selbstverständlich geworden, afrikanische Werke unter dem Namen ihres Stammes einzuordnen und sich damit zu begnügen. Bei der ausschließlich nach eigenen ästhetischen Kriterien wertenden Bezeichnung "Kunst" für die aus ihrem kulturellen Zusammenhang gelösten Werke der Afrikaner ist der Künstler selbst fast völlig uninteressant. Der Untertitel dieses Katalogs soll daran erinnern, daß die hier abgebildeten Werke von Afrikanern stammen, die auch in ihrer Gesellschaft als Meister geachtet wurden. Für die Afrikaner selbst waren die Meister nicht anonym. Neyt konnte bei seinen Forschungen in den 70er Jahren die Namen einer Reihe traditioneller Schnitzer zusammentragen, die in ihren Dörfern oder Gruppen noch bekannt waren. Die Skulpturen wurden erst an Europäer verkauft, als unter massiven Fremdeinflüssen andere Wertgegenstände die traditionell verankerten Ahnenfiguren und Regalien ersetzen konnten.
