Single sheet (22 ¼ x 19 ½) Full margins showing the plate mark. (light foxing & browning along margin, light offsetting). Very fine and uncommon map of Prussia; including Kaliningrad and parts of Poland and Lithuania. This map is in extraordinarily good condition; full margins exhibiting some aging (browning, light foxing) and some oxidation on verso from the beautiful original hand-coloring of the map. Beautifully embellished with an elegant title cartouche; fine ships sailing the Baltic Sea; and a land covered with tress, castles, and lakes. This map of Prussia was prepared by Caspar Henneberger in 1576; later copied and published by Nicolaes Visscher circa 1690. As with most Henneberger maps, it was originally engraved by Abraham Goos, a great artist and frequent collaborator of his. A most handsome chart insets a bird's-eye view of Konigsberg, providing us with legend that identifies 13 important buildings. The significance of this addition is the important role Konigsberg played in the area of trade and as the head center of Protestant teaching in Europe. The Kingdom of Prussia was a German kingdom that constituted the state of Prussia between 1701 and 1918 and included parts of present-day Germany, Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Denmark, Belgium and the Czech Republic. Despite the union between the Duchy of Prussia and Bradenberg in 1518, Prussia turned out to be a far more prosperous and commercially-advanced region than Bradenburg. In particular, the city of Königsberg (modern Kaliningrad) was an important trading and commercial centre, second only to Gdansk in Poland. In later years, Prussia had escaped serious devastation in the Thirty Years War, saving much of the architecture; however in 1656-57 the Tartars (allied with the Poles) launched a murderous attack, destroying anything which came into their wake. The Atlas Minor is a fine and comprehensive composite atlas, and one of a series of large atlases compiled and sold by the Visscher family of art dealers and cartographers in the 17th century. Founded by Nicholas Visscher, this work is known for the high quality of engraving, exceptionally fine ornament, and accurate geographical information. No two of the Visscher atlases seem to have been identical in content, and most contain, like this one, a selection of maps by the Visschers themselves as well as other cartographers. In this case the majority of the maps are published by Visscher. In addition to the striking world map by Allard with its black background and numerous projections, and found in the "Atlas Major" from about 1705, there are maps of the continents, regional maps of Europe, ten maps of Asia, and seven maps related to America. Very good. Some marginal water staining and light toning; attractive original color. Size 15 x 19 Inches. A beautiful, original-color example of Willem Blaeu's map of Prussia, among the maps first added to the Appendix in 1630. It depicts the region now comprised of northern Poland (as far south as Toru? on the Vistula River), the Russian province of Kaliningrad, and western Lithuania. Detail spans from just west of Gdansk to Augustów in the east. The northeast limits of the map are marked with the region of Samogitia, and the Lithuanian coastal town of Palanga. An August Lineage This map's production involves an array of the greatest names in early printed mapmaking. Though appearing in Willem Blaeu's atlases, the plate was among those engraved by Jodocus Hondius in 1629, which thereafter were purchased by Blaeu for inclusion in his atlases - after having replaced the former mapmaker's imprint with his own. Furthermore, although neither Hondius nor Blaeu acknowledge it, their map is an amended and embellished copy of Abraham Ortelius' 1595 map, itself derived from the magnificent and unobtainable 1576 map of Prussia produced by Caspar Hennenberger. Notable Changes It is initially tempting to say that Hondius' contributions to Ortelius' edition of the Hennenberger map were cosmetic. Certainly, Hondius' martial cartouche, and the buxom lamia decorating the legend at the upper right were fashionable improvements on the 16th-century strapwork of the Ortelius, Spaces left blank on the older map are here filled with beautifully-engraved mountains and forests. The Baltic is embellished with a fine compass rose, a sailing ship, and a wildly-hirsute sea monster. One obvious change in content between the Ortelius and the present work is the depiction of the Hel Peninsula north of the Pautzker Wick . Ortelius' depiction of it is identical to that of Hennenberger. Hondius has fattened it, and added two towns - Axtermis and Overnord - which do not appear on the Ortelius, but do appear on the 1595 Mercator. (That map, moreover, presents Hel Peninsula as an island - perhaps recording a prominent break in the sandbar?) The Mercator appears to also have been largely informed by the Hennenberger, but it was not a copy of the Ortelius, and with it there are more divergences in the neighboring regions. Mercator's source with respect to Hel Peninsula/Island is not known, but it would appear that while Hondius hewed close to the Ortelius, this obvious distinction led him to incorporate some but not all of Mercator's data. Publication History and Census This map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius for inclusion in his 1629 Appendix . Its imprint was altered by Blaeu for inclusion in his atlases in 1630, and that firm continued to use the plate until its replacement in the 1644-1655 Latin edition of the Atlas Novus . The present example conforms typographically to the 1635 French edition of that work. The map appears to be well represented in institutional collections. References: OCLC 776375901.
