Dibdin 518-519. Oldfather 26; 294. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "Epictetus". Epictetus lived during the first and second centuries A.C.E., and began life enslaved to a Roman noble. His work survived through a historiographer's (Arrian of Nicomedia) careful compilation of his lectures. Epictetus was one of the most prominent Stoic thinkers, concerned with self-regulation, integrity, and proper perception of one's personal circumstances. Epictetus argues that we ought to only concern ourselves with achieving our personal goals, and that we should not be concerned about that which is out of our control. The Stoic philosopher was highly influential among early Christian theologians. Oldfather refers to this set as a "deservedly celebrated work of learning and criticism". Dibdin also waxes poetic about the completeness and circumspect nature of the commentaries and scholarship included in this set. A beautifully bound set of Stoic thought. The joints on volume one repaired with Japanese tissue paper, the repair extends slightly onto the spine. Volumes one, two, and seven with light to moderate wear to their extremities (the front joint of volume two and the crowns of volumes one and seven).
