In den WarenkorbHardcover with Dust Jacket. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Translated by Philip Hereford. Blue cloth with gilt spine titles; 8.75 inches tall; xvi, 265 [6] pages, with publisher adverts. The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean; even age-toning, some offsetting on the endpages. Minimal shelf handling wear. The dust jacket is not price-clipped with age-toned spine and corner wear. Includes 50 illustrative games, most by Nimzowitsch. Widely regarded as one of the seminal works in modern chess theory. First published in German in 1925, this English edition brings Nimzowitsch's revolutionary ideas on positional play and hypermodern strategy to an English-speaking audience. The treatise systematically introduces the principles of prophylaxis, overprotection, pawn chains, and the concept of blockade, emphasizing the strategic over the purely tactical. Nimzowitsch combines theoretical exposition with illustrative games, offering players at all levels an opportunity to understand and apply his ideas in practice. His writing is both methodical and occasionally wry, reflecting his personality and deep insight into the psychology of chess. This edition preserves the clarity of the original while making it accessible to contemporary readers, maintaining its place as a foundational text for anyone serious about studying chess strategy. Subjects: Aron Nimzowitsch, chess strategy, positional play, hypermodernism, game analysis, instructional chess literature, Chess theory, instructional guide, strategy treatise.

He was the foremost figure amongst the hypermoderns. Born in part of the Russian Empire, the Jewish German-speaking Nimzowitsch came from a wealthy family, where he learned chess from his father, who was a merchant. In 1904, he travelled to Berlin to study philosophy, but set aside his studies soon and began a career as a professional chess player that same year. He won his first international tournament at Munich 1906.[3] Then, he tied for first with Alexander Alekhine at Saint Petersburg 1913/14 (the eighth All-Russian Masters' Tournament). During the 1917 Russian Revolution, Nimzowitsch was in the Baltic war zone. He escaped being drafted into one of the armies by feigning madness, insisting that a fly was on his head. He then escaped to Berlin, and gave his first name as Arnold, possibly to avoid anti-Semitic persecution. Nimzowitsch eventually moved to Copenhagen in 1922,[5] which coincided with his rise to the world chess elite, where he lived for the rest of his life in one small rented room.[6] In Copenhagen, he twice won the Nordic Chess Championship, in 1924 and 1934. He obtained Danish citizenship and lived in Denmark until his death in 1935." ; FINE. Book.
