Its methods permit to devise metal processing, allow to assess safety of structures against collapse, make possible to estimate flow of bulk solids. The technolog…ical progress calls both for deeper understanding of sources of plastic deformation and for more rigorous description of mecha nisms of plastic motion. It was felt at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research in Warsaw several years ago that an international meeting bringing together experts in various domains of plasticity and studying plastic behavior from different positions could be of use for further development of the discipline itself and for its service to society. The appropriate occasion for such a meeting sponsored by the Polish Academy of Sciences was provided by the 70th anniversary of Professor Wadaw Olszak. The idea of a fundamentals oriented symposium was favorably received by the scientific community over the world. Eminent scientists generously advised me as to the scope of the meeting and helped in shaping the program. It was eventually decided to concentrate the debates on a) physical foun dations of plasticity , b) thermodynamics of plastic and visco-plastic deform ation, c) experiments regarding plastic behavior, d) mathematical methods in plasticity, e) computer techniques suitable for solving important techno logical problems. The selection of papers was made accordingly. The symposium contributed papers were published in the volume entitled 'Foundations of plasticIty' and in the 'Archives of Mechanics' No.3, 1972.

This growing interest is…attested to by the success of both The International Journal of Plasticity, which after its inception rapidly became the leading journal for plasticity research, and the series ofInternational Symposia on Plasticity and Its Current Applications, which is now the premier international forum for plasticity research dissemination. The First International Symposium on Plasticity and Its Current Applications was conceived and organized by Professor Akhtar S. Khan, and was held at the University of Oklahoma (Norman, Oklahoma, USA) from July 30 to August 3, 1984. It was attended by over one hundred scientists from fifteen countries. 'Plasticity '89: the Second International Symposium on Plasticity and Its Current Applications' was held at Mie University (Tsu, Japan) from July 31 to August 4, 1989; this symposium was co-chaired by Professors Khan and Tokuda. The main emphasis of this meeting was on dynamic plasticity and micromechanics, although it included other aspects of plasticity as well. It was attended by over two hundred researchers from twenty-three nations.

It was held nea…r Munich (Federal Republic of Germany) between August 28 and September 3, 1978, in the 'Evange lische Academy' in the Castle of Tutzing which is situ ated in a park at Lake Starnberg overlooking the Alps. The subjects of the Symposium were basic aspects of the theoretical and experimental mechanics of metal form ing processes rather than technological details, or plas ticity as such. Thus the spectrum of the Conference extended from necessary physical background, through ex perimental, analytical, or numerical methods, to appli cations to specific technological deformation processes such as rolling, deep drawing, extrusion, etc. The following persons were by the IUTAM-bureau ap pointed to membership of the 'Scientific Committee' which was responsible for the nomination of participants as well as for the form of the scientific program: w. Johnson (U.K.), H. Kudo (Japan), H. Lippmann (F.R.G, chairman), G.S. Pisarenko (USSR), anc W. Szczepinski (Poland) . The technical organisation was in the hands of a 'Local Organizing Committee' formed by VI F. Fischer, K. Heckel, G. Kuhn, H. Lippmann (chairman), K. Magnus, V. Mannl, G. Sonntag, all of them from Munich and K. Lange (Stuttgart), O. Pa'Nelski (DUsseldorf) . This committee was supported by two secretaries, i.e.
