Zustand: new. Pages: 192 Language: Russian, English. Author's arrangement for piano (four hands). Edited by Victor Ekimovsky. Explanatory Article by Levon Hakobian. The Twelfth Symphony was first performed in the author's arrangement for piano four hands on 8 September 1961 at the RSFSR Union of Composers by composers Boris Tchaikovsky and Mieczyslaw (Moisey) Weinberg. This publication is based on the first edition of the piano score (Sovetsky kompozitor Publishers, Moscow,1962), collated with the author's manuscript that is kept in Dmitri Shostakovich's Archive (rec. gr. 1, inv. 1, f. 48) and the score (D. Shostakovich, New Collected Works, Vol. 12, DSCH, Moscow, 2013). Some differences in the music text of the score and its author's arrangement generated by the specifics of the piano texture (this applies to slurs, bowings, registers, and dynamic nuances) are retained and not given special mention. 9790706364568.…

Zustand: new. Pages: 188 Language: Russian, English. Author's arrangement for piano (four hands). Edited by Victor Ekimovsky. Explanatory Article by Vera Valkova. Soon after finishing the symphony, Shostakovich prepared its four-hand piano score. This was the version the author used to perform the symphony with Mieczyslaw (Moisey) Weinberg in Leningrad, first at the apartment of conductor Evgeny Mravinsky (23 and 24 November), who prepared the symphony for its premiere, and later (in the evening of 24 November) at the apartment of the composer's mother, Sofya Shostakovich, which Mravinsky made note of in his diary. Weinberg recalled these events later in an interview with Sofya Khentova. "We went to play the Tenth Symphony in Leningrad at Evgeny Mravinsky's. We performed it twice in the conductor's apartment on Borodinsky Street. We performed it four hands for the Leningrad composers, I played the right-hand part, Dmitri Dmitriyevich always sat to my left. There was a lively discussion in Leningrad at the House of Composers." On 15 February 1954, the piano version of the Tenth Symphony performed by Shostakovich and Weinberg was recorded at the Moscow Sound-Recording House. "The recording of the Tenth we performed was restored," Weinberg later witnessed, "and then it was included on a gramophone record called 'Shostakovich the Pianist' as a document, an aid for conductors: as played by Shostakovich." This publication is based on the first edition of the author's piano arrangement (Muzgiz Publishers, Moscow, 1954), collated with the author's manuscript kept at the Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture (rec. gr. 32, f. 69), and the edition of the score (New Collected Works, Vol. 10, DSCH, Moscow, 2009). A large number of bowings (slurs, accents, staccato dots, tenuto dashes) that exist in the instrumental parts in the score are missing in the author's manuscript and first edition of the piano score. In this edition, all the bowings have been inserted in accordance with the score and are not given specific mention. 9790706364681.…

Zustand: new. Pages: 150 Language: Russian, English. Symphony for full orchestra (with piano) in four movements. Edited by Alexandr Buzovkin. Explanatory Article by Manashir Iakubov. Symphony for full orchestra (with piano) in four movements: 1. Allegretto-Allegro non troppo 2. Allegro 3. Lento-Largo attaca 4. Lento-Allegro molto-Adagio-Largo-Presto Instrumentation: Piccolo (= flute III), 2 Flutes (II = Piccolo II), 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets (B flat and A), 2 Bassoons 4 Horns, 3 Trumpets (I and II B flat, III F), 3 Trombones, Tuba Timpani, Triangle, Side drum, Cymbals, Bass drum, Gong Glockenspiel, Piano Strings. Duration: Approx. 33 minutes Composed: September 1924-1 or 2 July 1925, at Petrograd/Leningrad. Began with the second movement. Piano score of the third movement completed in February 1925. Final alterations to the orchestration made in June 1926 after the premiere. Dedicated to Mikhail Vladimirovich Kvadri Three author's manuscripts of the score to the First Symphony were used in preparing this edition. Two of them are kept in Dmitri Shostakovich's private depositary in the Russian State Archives of Literature and Art (RSALA), an incomplete author's manuscript (IM), from which the first page is missing (the first 20 bars)-RSALA rec. gr. 2048, inv. 1, f. 1, and a complete fair copy of the author's manuscript (CFM), which serves as the basis of the work's first publication (Muzsektor Gosizdata, Moscow-Universal Publishers, Vienna, New York, 1927) - RSALA, rec. gr. 653, inv. 1, f. 2262. The third rough draft of the author's manuscript (RM) is kept in the Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture (GSCMMC), rec. gr. 32, f. 97. The publications of the symphony during Shostakovich's lifetime and the 1987 edition are also used (D. Shostakovich, Collected Works in 42 volumes, Vol. 1, Muzyka Publishers, Moscow, pp. 1-122), the text of which forms the basis of this edition. The early author's manuscript of the score (IM) dated 1923 is the original orchestral version of the composition, which differs from the final one in a few instrumentation details. In particular, two, instead of three, trumpets are used in this version and, correspondingly, the chords in the group of brass instruments are arranged differently. Of course, the CFM should be considered the most reliable source, which the composer apparently rewrote especially for the publishers. It was the CFM that was used as the basis of the text in the first volume of Collected Works (1987) mentioned above. Nevertheless, during preparation of this publication certain inaccuracies in the 1987 edition were revealed and corrected. Moreover, after Collected Works in 42 volumes had already come out, several additional sources and author's documents were discovered, relating to the First Symphony and its sheet music in particular, which were also taken into account in our edition. 9790706364520. …

Duration: Approx. 22 min. Composed: Dmitri Shostakovich precisely recorded the total time taken to finish the score of the Ninth Symphony in his manuscript, in which he entered the date when work on the first movement began and the dates when all the movements were completed. He began the first movement on 2 August and finished it on 5 August in Moscow, then composed the next three movements at the Composers' House in Ivanovo, whereby he finished the second movement on 12 August, the third on 20 August, and the fourth on 21 August. The last page of the author's manuscript of the score bears the inscription: "D. Shostakovich 30 VIII 1945 Moscow." Thus, it took Shostakovich about one month to write the score for his shortest symphony. The following sources were used in preparing this edition: the author's manuscript of the score kept in Dmitri Shostakovich's private archive in the Russian State Archives of Literature and Art (rec. gr. 2048, inv. 1, f. 12); proof sheet of an edition of the score with the author's corrections, dated 1946, kept in Dmitri Shostakovich's private archive in the Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture (rec. gr. 32, f. 12), all the editions of the score printed during Shostakovich's lifetime in the Soviet Union, and the edition included in the first posthumous Collected Works of Dmitri Shostakovich (Vol. 5, Muzyka Publishers, Moscow, 1979). The Symphony Fragment of 1945 The composition for symphony orchestra, published herewith, was discovered by the author of these lines at the end of 2003, amidst unidentified manuscripts in Dmitri Shostakovich's Archive. The manuscript consists of an orchestra score made up as follows: 2 Piccolo, 2 Flauti, 3 Oboi, Corno inglese, Clarinetto piccolo (Es), 3 Clarinetti (B), Clarinetto basso, 3 Fagotti, Contrafagotto 4 Trombe, 4 Corni, 4 Tromboni, 2 Tube Timpani, Tamburo, Piatti, Silofono Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi Externally, it amounts to six double, folded one inside the other, large format score sheets (paper "PASSANTINO BRANDS No. 30-30 Staves; printed in the U.S.A."; 46.5 h 31.8), written in Shostakovich's hand, with the author's pagination 1-24. The author's manuscript contains 322 bars (one crossed out) of note text, written in black (the first 192 bars) and blue ink; the bar-lines are done in pencil. On the first sheet, Shostakovich indicates the tempo: Allegro non troppo; the key of the work-E flat major, the time-signature-4/4. There are rehearsal numbers from 1-16 (further on they are absent). The note text breaks off at the end of page 24; thus, the rest was either lost or, which is more likely, never written down. The sheets were folded in the author's manuscript of the piano score of the opera The Gamblers, which is dated late 1942-early 1943. The external similarity of both manuscripts (black and blue ink, handwriting, paper) indicated without any doubt that they belong to the same period of time. A search for Shostakovich's unrealized symphonic ideas that were closest in terms of time to the period in question led to the Ninth Symphony, which as is well known was written in more than one stage, and made it possible to identify the manuscript as the first unfinished version of this Symphony. The Symphony Fragment of 1945 is being published in accordance with the author's manuscript kept in Dmitri Shostakovich's Archive, rec. gr. 1, sec. 1, f. 295. 9790706364674. …

Edited by Victor Ekimovsky. Explanatory Article by Manashir Iakubov. Shostakovich left on the same evening of the day the last movement was completed (20 July 1962) for Kiev12 to meet Boris Gmyrya, then on 23 July13 he went to Ust-Narva to see Evgeny Mravinsky, who were to participate in the premiere of the symphony. Some time later, however, both musicians declined to perform. So, it can be confirmed that by the time Gmyrya and Mravinsky acquainted themselves with the symphony during the third week of July, the piano score had already been completed. Yevtushenko made special mention of this: ".toward the end of July he [Shostakovich] invited me to visit him and placed on the piano a piano score on which was written 'Thirteenth Symphony'. Shostakovich then began the four-hand arrangement of the symphony for piano, which he wrote to Glikman about on 3 August 1962: "I am now doing the arrangement in four hands of the 13th symphony."19 Ten days later in a letter to Levon Atovmian, the composer said, "I have finished the 13th symphony," possibly meaning that he had finished the arrangement. It is likely that Shostakovich initially did the four-hand arrangement in order to present the symphony at the Union of Composers, the same as he did with his other orchestral opuses-the Ninth, Eleventh, Twelfth and Fifteenth symphonies. However, it has still not been established whether the Thirteenth Symphony was ever performed using this four-hand arrangement. Author's Arrangement for Voice and Piano This publication is based on the 1984 edition of the piano score from Dmitri Shostakovich's Collected Works (Vol. 9, Muzyka Publishers, Moscow) collated with the author's manuscript of the piano score, the author's manuscript of the score-AS, the 1971 and 1984 editions of the score, and also with the latest, 2011, edition of the score-New Collected Works, Vol. 13, DSCH, Moscow. Zustand: new. Pages: 166 Language: Russian, English. For chorus and orchestra. - Russian words. Extensive postscript with notes on the composition in Russian and English. Includes handwritten sketches and sketches as score. Author's arrangement for voice and piano. Published for the first time. Edited by Victor Ekimovsky. Explanatory Article by Manashir Iakubov. The author's arrangement (piano score) of the Third Symphony for singing with a piano two hands is being published for the first time according to the author's manuscript kept in Dmitri Shostakovich's private depository in the Russian State Archives of Literature and Art (rec. gr. 2048, inv. 1, f. 3). The score of the symphony's choral part is written out in full in the arrangement, which means it can be used when preparing the symphony to be performed by a choir. There are differences between the music text of the piano score and the text of the symphony score. In this edition, the piano score text is presented in as close compliance as possible with the symphony score (in so doing the text of the published score is given preference even in those few instances when the piano score version seems contextually more natural and logical). In addition to eliminating the differences, the extremely laconic author's piano score is supplemented in several, but very few, instances with some important details of text borrowed from the symphony score. The bars missing in the author's manuscript of the piano score are reinstated. At the same time, in some cases, for example in the reproduction of "athematic" orchestral crescendos, and on, the textual differences between the piano score and the symphony score, which frankly speaking are inevitable, are retained in the published text. There are a vast number of differences between the author's manuscript of the piano score and the symphony score in the tempo designations. Bearing in mind that, in all likelihood, the composer played the symphony on many occasions precisely from the piano score, when performing it for colleagues, we can say that the piano score text, in particular its tempo designations, is a kind of short-hand record of the author's performance and the author's ideas about the agogics of the work. In our publication, all th tempo designations are given in compliance with the symphony score. There are no metronome designations in the author's manuscript of the piano score. They have all been added to the text according to the symphony score and are not noted in the bar-by-bar comments. 9785900531120. …

Since the complete author's arrangement of the Second Symphony has not been found (and in all likelihood never existed), the arrangement of the symphony for piano in four hands by composer Tatyana Sergeyeva as ordered by DSCH Publishers specially for this publication is being published in this volume. The arrangement corresponds to the symphony score published in Volume 2 of New Collected Works (Moscow, 2001). Certain differences in details of the music text caused by specific features of the piano facture or which are unavoidable due to piano instead of orchestral sounding (for example, additional accents, dynamic signs necessary to identify a particular timbre or group of instruments, etc.) are not specified. 9785900531113.…

Explanatory Article by Levon Hakobian. Form: 1. Palace Square Adagio attacca 2. Ninth of January Allegro-Adagio-Allegro-Adagio attacca 3. Eternal Memory Adagio attacca 4. The Toscin Allegro non troppo-Allegro-Moderato-Adagio-Allegro The Eleventh Symphony is dedicated to the events of the first russian revolution of 1905. The symphony's four movements convey the atmosphere of the storm brewing in St.Petersburg on the eve of the fatal day of 9 January 1905: I. Palace Square-Adagio, the march of the deceived people on the Winter Palace and how they are fired upon by the Tsar's troops. II. Ninth of January-Allegro-Adagio-Allegro, mourning over those killed. III. Eternal Memory-Adagio; and the revolutionary breakthrough, oath-taking over the graves of the victims, and confidence in imminent victory. IV. The Tocsin-Allegro non troppo-Adagio-Allegro. The symphony's thematic material is based on popular songs of that time, most of them to music by anonymous authors, and two melodies from Shostakovich's choral poem "Ninth of January" (No. 6 of the choral cycle a cappella on texts of Russian revolutionary poets, op. 88, 1951). The finale of the symphony also features a melody from Georgy Sviridov's operetta Ogon'ki ("Lights", 1951). Instrumentation: Piccolo (= Flute III), 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, Cor anglais (= Oboe III), 2 Clarinets (B flat and A), Bass Clarinet (= B flat Clarinet III), 2 Bassoons, Contrabassoon (= Bassoon III) 4 Horns, 3 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, Tuba Timpani, Triangle, Side drum, Cymbals, Bass drum, Gong Xylophone, Celesta, Orchestral bells 2-4 Harps 1st Violins (16-20), 2nd Violins (14-18), Violas (12-16), Cellos (10-14), Double-basses (10-12). The arrangement of the first movement of the Sixth Symphony for piano in four hands published in this volume of Dmitri Shostakovich's New Collected Works was done by the composer himself. The author's manuscript of this work is kept in Shostakovich's personal depository at the Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture (GSCMMC, rec. gr. 32, f. 67). The author's arrangements of the second and third movements of the symphony have not been found. In all likelihood, they were never made. The second and third movements of the symphony are published in this edition in the arrangement by composer Boris Tishchenko. The arrangement of the entire symphony for piano in four hands was done by Boris Tishchenko at Shostakovich's request and printed by Muzyka Publishers during the author's lifetime, in 1975, and so should be recognized as authorized. Our publication is based on this edition (the second and third movements). The author's arrangement of the Ninth Symphony for piano four hands is being published for the first time based on the author's manuscript kept in the Shostakovich Foundation at the Mikhail Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture (rec. gr. 32, f. 99). When preparing the publication, the numerous additional author's marks made in pencil on the manuscript were taken into account as much as possible. Unfortunately, it is rather difficult to establish the authorship of these marks with any certainty, and at times, for example in the cases of crescendo or diminuendo symbols, impossible. However, it is certain that most of these marks were not made by Shostakovich, but most likely by musicians with whom he performed the symphony using this copy. The sheet music of the author's manuscript of the arrangement has been collated with the author's manuscript of the orchestral score kept at the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art (rec. gr. 2048, inv. 1, f. 12), with the proof-sheet copy of the score kept at the State Central Museum of Musical Culture (rec. gr. 32, f. 15), and also with the symphony score printed in Volume Five of Shostakovich's Collected Works, and has been extensively supplemented with dynamic, bowing and other indications. The metronomic marks, which are entirely absent in the author's manuscript of the arrangement, have been added in keeping with the score, and the bar numbers have also been inserted. The entire author's texture of the arrangement has been left untouched. Obvious inaccuracies in the text of the author's manuscript have been corrected without any additional comment. 9785900531168.…

The score of the Eleventh Symphony was finished on 4 August 1957.17 Soon thereafter, the composer did the symphony's arrangement for piano in four hands, which he informed yevgeny Mravinsky about in a letter of 24 August, adding: "During this time Weinberg and I had learned it and were able to play it." However, Shostakovich's partner in the first performances of the piano reduction of the symphony (17 September, leningrad House of Composers; 25 September, Board of the USSR union of Composers, Moscow) was not Mieczyslaw (Moisey) Weinberg, but Mikhail Meyerovich. The whereabouts of the manuscript of the four-hand arrangement of the symphony is not known. The arrangement was published in 1958 by Muzgiz Publishers (editor, levon Atovmian). This publication is based on the first edition of the arrangement (Muzgiz Publishers, Moscow, 1958). The author's arrangement has not been found in the archives although on the title page of the first edition it says "Author's Arrangement for Piano in four Hands. Editor l. Atovmian". The present edition has been collated with the score (New Collected Works, Vol. 11, DSCH, Moscow, 2012). 9790706364513.…

In these cases, in 1984 edition, all the signs that differ from the author's manuscript are enclosed in square brackets. When these signs are used in this edition, the square brackets have been removed and their absence is not specified in the comments. Several significant episodes where phrasing slurs and legato slurs are missing, but at the beginning of each such episode, a legato sempre (or legato) sign is given. In most such cases in this edition, the slurs are printed in accordance with the score text, while the legato sempre and legato signs are removed as redundant and their absence is not specified in the comments either. 9790706364421.…

Zustand: new. Pages: 220 Language: Russian, English. Author's arrangement for two pianos. Published for the first time. Edited by Manashir Iakubov. The author's arrangement of the Fourth Symphony for two pianos (four hands) is being published for the first time. In 1946, a few copies were made on a collotype press by the USSR Music Foundation, without indicating the author of the arrangement, so that the members of the Union of Composers could acquaint themselves with the symphony. In 1948, after the Resolution of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) Central Committee "On the Opera The Great Friendship by Muradeli" was issued, circulation of copies of this collotyped piano score was banned, and they were confiscated from use. The present publication was prepared on the basis of the author's manuscript kept in the Shostakovich Foundation at the Mikhail Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture (rec. gr. 32, f. 98). While preparing the manuscript for publication, the sheet music was collated with the collotyped copy of the piano score in Shostakovich's family archive, as well as with the symphony score published in 1962 while Shostakovich was still alive (Sovetsky Kompositor Publishers, Moscow). In so doing, several significant differences were found in the orchestral and the piano versions of the composition, primarily, in the metronomic and tempo marks. In this publication, the metronomic marks of the author's piano score in the first two movements have been preserved, and in the third movement the tempo and metronome have been inserted in keeping with the score. The entire author's texture of the piano arrangement has been left untouched, however, the musical text has been extensively supplemented with dynamic, bowing, etc. indications borrowed from the score. Number references have also been inserted in accordance with the orchestral score. In the author's manuscript of the arrangement, Shostakovich only indicated orchestra instruments once or twice, in this publication, however, the editor considered it expedient to provide such indications throughout the entire symphony. In addition, repeat of bar 4 in number 104, and the double bars omitted from the author's manuscript of the arrangement in numbers 256 and 257 have been reinstated in accordance with the orchestral score. Obvious inaccuracies in the text of the author's manuscript have been corrected without any additional comment. 9785900531137.…

Zustand: new. Pages: 135 Language: Russian, English. Author's arrangement for two pianos. Edited by Sergey Chebotaryov. Explanatory Article by Levon Hakobian. The manuscript of the author's arrangement of the Fifteenth Symphony "for two pianos in four hands" is kept in Dmitri Shostakovich's Archive. It fills 97 pages of score paper and does not contain any performance directions. There are a few crossings out, while some performance marks and slurs have clearly been introduced later in lighter ink. According to the chronological catalogue of Shostakovich's works, the author's arrangement of the Fifteenth Symphony for two pianos was completed on 4 January 1972, but there is no date in the author's manuscript. Whatever the case, this date contradicts what Sophia Khentova and Krzysztof Meyer mention in their biographical works about Moisey Weinberg and Boris Tchaikovsky playing the symphony on two pianos at the beginning of August 1971. This publication is based on the lifetime edition of the author's arrangement for two pianos (Sovetsky kompozitor, Moscow, 1977) collated with the author's manuscript of the piano score (the Arrangement for Two Pianos [Dmitri Shostakovich's Archive, rec. gr. 1, inv. 1, f. 70]) and the score (New Collected Works, Vol. 15, DSCH, Moscow, 2012). The enharmonic differences between the score and the piano score in both author's manuscripts and in the lifetime edition have been left unchanged. 9790706364445. …

Symphony for full orchestra (with harp) in three movements. Edited by Victor Ekimovsky. Explanatory Article by Manashir Iakubov. Form: 1. Largo 2. Allegro 3. Composed: Late January to mid-October 1939. The original text of all the editions of the score of the Sixth Symphony is not the author's manuscript, but a hand-written copy of the score with the author's notes which is kept in Dmitri Shostakovich's private depository in the Russian State Archives of Literature and Art (rec. gr. 2048, inv. 1, f. 7). The score of the Sixth Symphony was published three times during the composer's lifetime: in 1941 (Muzgiz Publishers, Moscow), 1962 (Muzyka Publishers, Moscow) and 1968 (Muzyka Publishers, Moscow). In 1980, the first posthumous edition of the score was published in Volume 3 of Dmitri Shostakovich's Collected Works (Muzyka Publishers, Moscow) using the authorised hand-written copy and the 1941 and 1962 editions, but without reference to the 1968 edition. This edition is based on the score published in the Collected Works, but also takes into account the 1968 edition. We have removed any editing corrections we feel are superfluous. Obvious errors in the text are corrected without comment. Clarifications by the editor are given in square brackets. The editor of the first posthumous edition of the score in Volume 3 of the Collected Works (1980), who did not take into account the 1968 edition, apparently considered the 1962 edition the last edition published during Shostakovich's lifetime and thus an expression of the author's final will. In this edition, we are restoring the metronome marks of hand-written copy, which also appear in the first and last editions of the score published during the composer's lifetime. 9790706427430. …
