In den WarenkorbEdition : Third edition. , Contemporary full calf, expertly rebacked in six compartments of raised bands, gilt title on two, endpapers marbled. , A very important book on the growth and management of trees in England. As the editor indicates, ?soon after the publication of the Silva, which made its appearance in 1664, under the Auspices of the Royal Society, the Spirit for Planting increased to a high degree; and there is reason to believe that many of our ships which, in the last war, gave laws to the whole world, were constructed from Oaks planted at that time.?John Evelyn was born into a substantial Surrey landowning family. He embarked on a prolonged and formative period of travel in Italy and France, finally coming to rest in Paris in 1647. He soon established himself as one of the foremost virtuosi of his day. Evelyn?s Silva was ?the first important book to be published in [Britain] on forest trees . . . no other work on the arboriculture exerted a greater influence on forestry in this country . . . and certainly no other book on the subject was so often quoted.?, Size : Small folio., Ex-libris on front pastedown endpaper. Title in red and black. With 1 copper-engraved plate and 3 copper-engraved in-text illustrations. Elaborate head and tail pieces throughout., Volume : Four volumes in one., P. title, blank, dedication (2), forward (16), advertisement (3), (47), 1-281; title, blank, dedication (1), blank, 287-334; title, blank, dedication (2), 339-412; title, blank, dedication (2), 5-38, errata (1). In den WarenkorbFolio, pp.[lxxii], 412, 38, [2], with a preliminary blank; five large or full-page engraved illustrations and a woodcut of a cider vat (new to this edition); title printed in red and black, part-titles to A Philosophical Discourse of Earth (second edition) and Pomona (third edition) each dated 1678, part-title to Kalendarium Hortense (fifth edition) printed in red and black with woodcut device; marginal paper-flaw to lower outer corner of i2, but a very good copy; contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, manuscript fore-edge title; ownership inscriptions of George Musgrave to the title page, and of his son, also George Musgrave, to front endpaper, with the former's notes on cider making to the preliminary blank.Third, enlarged edition of Evelyn's Sylva, the foundational work of English forestry that remained the standard English treatise on the subject well into the nineteenth century. First delivered before the Royal Society in 1662 at the request of the Commissioners of the Navy, Evelyn's treatise sought to remedy England's dwindling timber reserves. The work advances a persuasive case for the cultivation and preservation of woodland by drawing together practical arboriculture, classical learning, and natural philosophy in an encyclopaedic survey of Britain's trees, their cultivation, soils, medicinal properties, and uses. The economic and arboreal success that emerged out of the work was attested to by Evelyn himself, who claims in this edition's address to CharlesII, 'I need not acquaint your majesty how many millions of Timber-Trees (beside infinite others) have been propagated, and planted through your vast dominions, at the instigation and by the sole direction of this work'. This third edition is described as 'much inlarged, and improved' and incorporates the revised second edition of Terra, Evelyn's philosophical discourse on soils; the enlarged third edition of Pomona, on fruit trees and cider; and the fifth edition of the Kalendarium Hortense with further additions. Provenance: George Musgrave (16481721) of Nettlecombe, Somerset, brother of the physician and antiquary William Musgrave (16551721, Fellow of the Royal Society, for which he acted as secretary, and editor of the Philosophical Transactions in 1685). George, who studied at Exeter College, Oxford, and then qualified as a barrister, was a friend of Edward and Mary Clarke, the friends and correspondents of John Locke. A contemporary recipe for clarifying cider is written on the front endpaper under which Musgrave has noted that the recipe is 'probatum sed non approbatum' and has crossed it through accordingly. A second recipe follows below, as well as a list of quantities and measurements on the front pastedown. The front endpaper also bears the later inscription of his son, George Musgrave. First Edition of "the first important book to be published in [Britain] on forest trees. No other work on arboriculture exerted a greater influence on forestry in this countryand certainly no other book on the subjectwas so often quoted." (Henrey, pp. 101 & 108). In 1662 the Commissioners of the Navy consulted the newly founded Royal Society about encouraging the replacement of the carelessly depleted stocks of trees to provide timber for ships. Evelyn who had practical experience planting trees consequently wrote the present discourse, which was originally read before the Royal Society the same year, and was ordered to be printed in 1664. It is the first official publication of the Royal Society and was a resounding success, reaching five editions by 1729. The work systematically described most kinds of tree found in the country and offered practical advice on pruning, insect control, wound treatment, and transplanting. Wing E3516. Henrey 132. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of Evelyn's most celebrated book and a foundational precursor of late modern conservation literature. Evelyn's appeal for a national scheme of reforestation is also famously the first book to be printed by order of the Royal Society, which had been founded four years previously. During the 1640s and 1650s production of glass and iron increased rapidly, and the wood used to fire the furnaces and factories was not being replaced by fresh planting. This led to a serious shortage of wood from which the Navy could construct ships. Evelyn petitioned the king for a concerted campaign of reforestation and claimed in his preface that he had induced landowners to plant many millions of trees. Alexander Hunter, who edited five editions of Sylva in the 18th and early 19th centuries, wrote in his preface that "soon after the publication of the Sylva. the Spirit for Planting increased to a high degree; and there is reason to believe that many of our ships, [used] in the last war. were constructed from Oaks planted at that time". The appendix Pomona includes a collection of five contributions on the making of cider by other writers, Mr Beale, Sir Paul Neil, John Newburgh, Doctor Smith and Captain Taylor. This copy has extensive manuscript notes in the form of a shipping and prices log on the endpapers and initial and final integral leaves, dated September 1772 onwards; the shipping log appears to be for a merchant ship delivering rum. Present too are the ownership signature to the front free endpaper and stamps to the title page and dedication page of the Scottish writer and clergyman Aulay Macaulay (1758- 1819), brother of Colin and Zachary Macaulay, and uncle of the historian Thomas Babington Macaulay. Aulay published Essays on various Subjects of Taste and Criticism in 1780, and Two Discourses on Sovereign Power and Liberty of Conscience in 1781. The title page has the pencilled ownership signature of John S. Hicks (1842-1904) in New Island; a lumber merchant, Hicks took a great interest in forestry and was a supporter of the Agricultural Society of Queens and Nassau, a particularly appropriate provenance for this volume.
