First edition of the Dutch translation of a work on travels through Europe, undertaken and written by Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715). Burnet was a Scottish historian, philosopher, and later Bishop of Salisbury. In 1685 Burnet left Great-Brittain to travel Europe, where he visited the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. During his stay in the Netherlands, Burnet got exiled from England by King James II, after writing a pamphlet advising the Dutch prince William and his wife Mary not to support James for the repeal of the Test Act. The text is written in the form of letters, starting in Zurich, to Milan, Florence, Rome, and ending in Nijmegen, where he noted everything that "seemed most remarkable" and was unheard of in any other travelogue.Binding rubbed along the extremities, paper cracked at the hinges (hinges still firm) and spine discoloured. Title-page reattached (restored in the gutter), some spots and smudges throughout and a few leaves slightly browned. A good copy.l STCN (6 copies); Tiele, Bibl. 217; cf. Berne, Descriptions géographiques et récits de voyages et excursions en suisse, p. 26. Modern multi-coloured decorative boards. With woodcut decoration on title-page and a woodcut tailpiece. MAP OF SWITZERLAND, THE AREA AROUND BERN AND FRIBOURG "Das Wiflispurger Gou" [now called Avenches, in the canton of Vaud], copper engraving made by Gerard Mercator in 1595 and published by Jodocus Hondius as part of the "Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et fabricati figura" in 1607. With original hand colouring. Verso: Latin text. Size: (plate mark): 34 x 45 cm. On the reverse it states: "This map depicts almost the entire territory of Bern, as well as that of Fribourg." It is described in detail: Bern is praised as a city that, though not particularly ancient, need yield to no other city in situation, institutions, laws, power, and civic civilisation. According to legend, Duke Berchtold of Zähringen wished to build a new city near his castle Nydegg on a wooded promontory. He decreed that the city would be named after the first animal caught during the hunt: a bear, German "Bär". This is said to be how Bern received its name. For this reason, the city council continuously kept several live bears in a specially constructed bear pit, the Bärengraben, as a visible symbol of the city. Bern lies on the river Aare, which encircles the city almost like an island and serves as a natural moat. Only on the western side is there a land connection. The surrounding area is fertile, though not particularly suited to viticulture; the people of Bern obtain good wine from nearby regions. Lausanne is an episcopal city. According to the early modern tradition followed by the text, the bishop's seat was transferred from the region of Aventicum/Avenches to Lausanne around 590. It is a remarkably situated city, spread across two facing hills and an intervening valley. After the death of Duke Charles the Bold, Lausanne eventually came, together with the surrounding region, under Bernese rule, although the citizens were to retain their privileges and rights. The text then turns to Fribourg/Freiburg on the Sarine/Saane. The author places the city within the Zähringen founding tradition and mentions it alongside Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany): two cities with related names, both meaning 'free strongholds'. Swiss Fribourg has a remarkable situation: it lies partly on a hill and partly in a valley. The river Sarine/Saane flows through the lower parts of the city. The town hall stands on a steep rock where the castle once stood; from that castle the city gradually grew both upward and downward over time. The facing hills carry the city walls; on the eastern hill, however, there are almost no houses, only defensive works. Wherever one walks through the city, one must constantly climb or descend. The surrounding land produces everything that is needed, except wine, which must be imported. Both Bern and Fribourg had a republican form of government with a 'Schultheiss' as chief magistrate and a Great and a Small Council. Important matters of state are submitted to the Great Council; day-to-day administration and municipal affairs rest primarily with the Small Council. (After the end of the Ancien Régime in 1798, this system of government changed.) Price: Euro 295,-.

"Potentissimae Helvetiorum Reipublicae cantones tredecim" [The thirteen most important cantons of the Swiss Republic], copper engraving published by Johann Baptist Homann in Neuremberg around 1730. Original hand colouring with later additions. Size: 49,5 x 58 cm. Whilst Europe was torn by the Thirty Years' War, Switzerland experienced the 17th century as a period of peace and rising prosperity. The cities generally lay low and watched the destruction from afar. Neutrality was beneficial to the economy, allowing the confederation to supply other countries with goods. The influx of refugees, especially French Huguenots after their expulsion in 1685, was particularly important in rehabilitating old crafts and establishing new enterprises. Accumulated mainly from the pensions of the mercenary system and from commercial sources, Swiss capital was desperately needed in those countries that constantly were at war, especially in France, and Genevan bankers became the centre of an extensive European financial network. There was plenty of capital available to finance industrial expansion. Natural resources did not exist in sufficient quantities for easy exploitation and the cultivation of land could not support the rising population, meaning the Swiss Confederation had ample supply of labour. As landlocked Switzerland had no shipping enterprises or colonial possessions, industry was the obvious way to develop economically. The map's large title cartouche incorporates coats of arms of the thirteen cantons of Early Modern Switserland as well as 20 coats of arms of "allied and subject provinces". Armed putti are waving the Swiss confederate flag. The decoration in the lower left has an Alpine scene with cows and a traveller crossing a river on a mountain pass. A second scene shows a local preparing cheese in a kettle. Price: 375,-.

SWISS CONFEDERATION OF THE XIII CANTONS "Carte Geneneral de Treize Cantons Suisse et des Differents Etats de leur Dependance; ainsi que le pluspart des etats qui leur sont Voisins et Aliez", [general map of the thirteen Swiss cantons and the different states dependent on them; as well as most of the states that are their neighbors and allies.] Copper engraving made by Henri Abraham Châtelain published in Amsterdam 1705-1720, as part of the "Atlas Historique". Coloured by a later hand. Size ca. 47 x 61 cm. At the top of this detailed map are the coats of arms of the 13 cantons of the Swiss Confederation, with the cities and allies depicted in the lower left and right corners. The tables surrounding the map show the ranking of the cantons, the year in which they formed their union, and the various states that are dependent on them. While Europe was torn apart by the Thirty Years' War, Switzerland experienced the 17th century as a period of peace and rising prosperity. Neutrality was beneficial for the economy, allowing the confederation to supply other countries with goods. There was also an influx of refugees, particularly French Huguenots after their expulsion in 1685, who greatly contributed to the revival of old crafts and the establishment of new enterprises. With the pensions from the mercenary system and commercial activity, capital was accumulated, which was loaned to neighbouring countries constantly at war, particularly France. The bankers in Geneva thus became the center of an extensive European financial network. There was also enough capital available to finance national industrial expansion. Natural resources were not available in sufficient quantities for easy exploitation, and agricultural output was not enough for the growing population. As a result, the Swiss Confederation had ample access to labour. And since landlocked Switzerland had no shipping enterprises or colonial possessions, the industrial sector became the driving force behind economic development. Châtelain's Atlas Historique was an ambitious work, covering a range of subjects including genealogy, cosmography, topography, heraldry and chronology. It was first published in Amsterdam in 1705-20. The text was compiled by Nicholas Gueudeville and Garillon with a supplement by H. P. de Limiers and the maps were engraved by Chatelain, primarily after maps by Guillaume de l'Isle. it was one of the most expansive Dutch encyclopedias of the age. Prijs: Euro 425,-.

Contemporary vellum, ink title on spine, covers stained. 4°: pi2 *2 2*1 A-X4 Z-3O4 3P1, pag.: [10] 1-456 [26]. With engr. title and eight full-page etchings by Hillebrand van der Aa. Upper left corner of the frontispiece cut. Copy with contemporary ownership mark of Saamuel Otto ('geb. 1875') on the first flyleaf and the printed exlibris of C.S. Lechner. Bookhistorian P.J. Verkruijsse pointed to a curious fault in the present Dutch edition of Gavin's travels. The preliminary pages contain a 'Waarschouwinge aan den boekbinder' [warning to the bookbinder] stating that the Y-gathering of the first part is omitted by mistake of the printer, without any loss of text. However, in fact the Y-gathering of the second part of the book lacks. The pages 169-176 are indeed not te be found, but the text continues just as well. The etcher Hillebrand van der Aa (ca 1660-ca 1721) was a brother of the famous Leiden bookseller Pieter van der Aa. Also available a copy in full contempory vellum and with engraved title and all prints, but the title page missing, for 300 euro. B0030.

SWISS CONFEDERATION OF THE XIII CANTONS "Nova Helvetiae foederatarumque nec non subditarum Regionum Tabula ad Usum Serenissimi Burgundiae Ducis" [Map of the new Swiss federated as well as subordinate regions, for the use of the most serene Duke of Burgundy," copper engraving made by Guillaume De l'Isle and published around 1758 by Johan Covens & Cornelis Mortier. Original hand colouring with later additions. Size: approx. 47 x 61 cm. As a result, the Swiss Confederation had ample access to labour. And since landlocked Switzerland had no shipping enterprises or colonial possessions, the industrial sector became the driving force behind economic development. The towns and villages on the map are marked with a symbol indicating whether they were Catholic or Protestant (or both), which was important at the time. Also shown are the baths and major vineyards. The cartouche in the upper right shows us the coats of arms of the 13 cantons of the Swiss Confederation, while the coats of arms of 11 allied cities are shown in the lower left. The house of Covens & Mortier (1721-1866), the largest cartographic publishing house of the 18th century, was founded by Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) and Cornelis Mortier (1699-1783), located on the Vijgendam in Amsterdam. The partnership arose after the death of Pieter Mortier (1661-1711), the son of a French political refugee, who in 1690 had obtained the privilege to distribute maps and atlases from French publishers in Holland. His widow continued the business until her death in 1719. Her son Cornelis then took charge for a few years, under his father's name. In 1721, a partnership was established by Cornelis Mortier and Johannes Covens I. That same year, Covens married Cornelis' sister. Their firm would experience significant expansion over the next 140 years. Until 1732 their company was located next to the Amsterdam stock exchange. Their main competitors were Reinier & Josua Ottens and the firm of Gerard Valck and Petrus Schenck. Price: Euro 475,-.
