Paperback. Zustand: Good. Often controversial and sometimes even shocking to audiences, the work of California-based artist Suzanne Lacy has challenged viewers and participants with personal accounts of traumatic events, settings that require people to assume uncomfortable positions, multisensory productions that evoke emotional as well as intellectual responses, and even flayed lambs and beef kidneys. Lacy has experimented with ways to claim the power of mass media, to use women?s consciousness-raising groups as a performance structure, and to connect her projects to lived experiences. The body and large groups of bodies are the locations for her lifelike art, revealing the aesthetics of relationships among people. In this critical examination of Suzanne Lacy, Sharon Irish surveys Lacy?s art from 1972 to the present, demonstrating the pivotal roles that Lacy has had in public art, feminist theory, and community organizing. Lacy initially used her own body-or animal organs-to visually depict psychological states or social conditions in photographs, collages, and installations. In the late 1970s she turned to organizing large groups of people into art events-including her most famous work, The Crystal Quilt, a 1987 performance broadcast live on PBS and featuring hundreds of women in Minneapolis-and pioneered a new genre of public art. Irish investigates the spaces between art and life, self and other, and the body and physical structures in Lacy?s multifaceted artistic projects, showing how throughout her influential career Lacy has created art that resists racism, promotes feminism, and explores challenging human relationships.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Suzanne Lacy's participative works show the transformative power of art and its potential to initiate social debates. As one of the leading voices of the feminist art movement of the 1970s, Lacy developed social practice, a new model that combined art and social action. In the early 1970s, at an extraordinarily early stage, Lacy addressed sexualized violence in her artwork. In 1972 she organized Ablutions (with Judy Chicago, Sandra Orgel, and Aviva Rahmani), a performance to address rape from the perspective of people who identify as women. Of special note is Three Weeks in May, a three-week performance that revolves around reported rapes in Los Angeles. With these early works, Lacy and her colleagues were pioneers, both artistically and socially, in making gender-based violence a matter of public discussion from a decidedly female perspective. In her works the victims were given a voice and the patriarchal social causes of this violence were named. This small publication accompanies the exhibition at Museum Tinguely that highlights the global relevance and topicality of the subject. Lacy shows a video installation based on her participatory and dialogic performance from 2015. The artist was invited to develop a performance that allowed the letters collected within the scope of the Cartas de Mujeres campaign (2011-12) to receive public attention and acknowledgment. It was a project dedicated to fighting violence against women. The performance, an event with five acts and around four hundred people who identify as men, took place in Quito on November 25, 2015, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The publication includes a scholarly article and an interview of the curator, Sandra Beate Reimann, with the artist.; Suzanne Lacys partizipative Arbeiten zeigen die transformative Kraft der Kunst und ihr Potenzial, gesellschaftliche Debatten anzustoßen.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - What is--what should be--the place of art in society Is it merely decorative Is it only to affirm a given set of cultural preferences Or should it examine, challenge, even upend these norms to bring open new perspectives for those who experience what artists create Social practice artists offer a clear and unflinching answer to this question, setting before us works intended not merely to ask questions but to propose pathways toward large societal change. In this volume, the work of two social practice artists of different generations and different social locations--Suzanne Lacy and Pablo Helguera--are brought into creative tension by two visionary curators: Elyse A. Gonzalez of the Art, Design & Architecture Museum of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Sara Reisman of the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation of New York. Working together, Gonzales and Reisman bring the work of these two engaged and activist artists into dialogue, showing how art can be not merely the mirror of society but the means of making it more just, more inclusive, and more humane.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. 56 pp. Englisch, Deutsch.…
