First Edition of the first systematic English textbook on ophthalmic surgery! George James Guthrie's (1785-1856) "founded the Royal Westm…inister Ophthalmic Hospital London. in 1816. He was the earliest teacher of the subject in the British Isles. The above includes important work on the artificial pupil." Garrison & Morton "Guthrie's lectures on ocular operations are perhaps not quite complete (the operation on the lacrimal system are lacking), but nevertheless they represent a superb contribution, the first such book in English; it is the second one in the world literature after the surgical course by G. Pellier de Quengsy, 1789-1790. Guthrie is more objective that his predecessor, but his follower Christian Jüngken of Berlin (1829) surpasses him in the systematic approach. The reviewer in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal (No.94, page 120, 1828) praises Guthrie's book without reservations: "Guthrie's work is doubtless the most comprehensive treatise at present extant . Mr. Guthrie has not confined himself to the results of mere personal experience. He has evidently bestowed great pains in studying the works of the foreign ophthalmological writers, and he has exercised in general a just and liberal spirit of remark on the merits of their respective methods of treatment." Guthrie's younger contemporary and countryman Middlemore also lauds this book .
