Softcover. Zustand: gut. 2004. This latest book by Jock Sturges is outstanding. The single-page introduction gives the background to the pictures, and it prepares the reader for the delightful, poignant, beautiful, stunning, first-rate photographs that follow. It is a tribute to the girl / adolescent / woman Fanny, and to the continued brilliance of one of the very best photographers alive today. Is it worth the price? Definitely. Jock Sturges presents twenty five plates selected from fourteen years of his career. These includes several of his remarkable images. They won't be new to those who have followed his publications before. However, here each plate contains a commentary on the opposite page. In it the photographer describes the family and setting from which the image emerges. What makes so much of his work stand out is his ability to relate to these subjects and their family. The trust and comfort he has earned is rewarded with the complexity of the character he is able to capture on film. Coupled with his eye for setting and attention to detail the results are remarkable. Jock Sturges Twenty-Five Years is a unique addition to the growing family of Jock Sturges publications. It is the first that presents an overview of his classic images made between the years 1978-2003 with personal commentary by the photographer opposite each reproduction. Beautifully printed in a limited first edition of 3000 copies. Selections from series that extend across many years dispel the aura of sensationalism that has dogged his work, revealing his close, long-term relationships with many subjects. From his "Misty Dawn" series showing a young California girl coming of age (1987-95), to "Marine", showing a girl on a French nudist beach (1987-95), it is clear that Sturges's subjects know and trust him. Included here are over 130 previously unpublished images. Hardcover. Zustand: gut. 1994. In Radiant Identities, photographer Jock Sturges explores issues of youth and the liberation of body and spirit. These unforgettable images are made from his own circle of acquaintances and family; the settings are their homes and stretches of naturist beaches in France and Northern California. In superb reproductions, Sturges evokes the classical spirit of Old Master paintings and late-nineteenth-century photographic tableaux, while probing concepts of emergent sexuality and psychological intimacy. Aperture's 1991 publication of Sturges's first book, The Last Day of Summer, came shortly after the FBI's much-publicized raid on his home in California, the confiscation of thousands of his images--deemed "pornographic"--and the subsequent rejection of the case by a federal grand jury. Now in its fifth printing, The Last Day of Summer has outlived and transcended that ordeal, drawing both critical and popular acclaim throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and bringnig Sturges well-deserved artistic recognition. Radiant Identities is the second volume in Sturges's ongoing work. Physically and psychically revealing, these deeply felt images are glorioiusly natural and wonderfully compelling. Elizabeth Beverly's introductory essay, drawn in part from conversations with Sturges's subjects, adds a new dimension to the photogarphs. These personal reflections shed light on the unique collaborative process by which Sturges's remarkable photographs are made. In the book's afterward, noted photography critic A.D. Coleman places Sturges in the context of current debates surrounding censorship in the arts, and discusses the themes of innocence and sexuality in the photographs. Hardcover. Zustand: gut. 01 edition. Natural innocents in family settings Before reviewing this book, let me caution potential readers and purchasers that the images contained in the book include many nudes of young female children. If such would be offensive to you, please stop reading here. Due to the nature of the the content and its subjects, this material would not be able to achieve an "R" rating for a motion picture. I would certainly have discouraged my daughters from appearing in these scenes. If you are not familiar with Jock Sturges, he presents a most unusual oeuvre. His subject is the physical, emotional, and psychological development of young girls. He portrays his subjects usually in nudist camps where they can be displayed more fully. Many of his models have appeared in his work since quite young ages. The images are usually taken outdoors with a large format camera, and are posed to create quite complex compositions. At the same time, he wants you to notice nuances in how the bodies are changing, the emotions are developing, and what the personalities are like. He uses the interaction with nature and the other models to bring out the point of each photograph, and lets time provide the rest of the perspective by repeatedly showing the same models over the years. In this work, you will usually see a model over 2-3 years. The images are very well reproduced on gorgeous paper. I found the duotone images generally better than the color ones, but the color images had a reason for being that caused them to be useful. They pick up the strong color of an eye, or show the connection in skin coloration with a sibling or parent. Beyond the natural beauty of the human form, you will find yourself impressed that the young people are pretty comfortable with the camera. I liked the poses where the teenage rebellion and awkwardnesses were showing at least a little. You will also be interested to see genetic influences as two sisters stand near one another, often with their mother. That creates a reflection of inner beauty that is quite remarkable. The drawbacks of this book's images come in that some scenes are so carefully constructed that they seem artificial and abstract, which steals humanity from the models. Also, the book contains no essay to explain the work. Some would benefit from some words to help them "see" what is contained here. A potential benefit of this book could be in helping female adolescents become more comfortable with their own developing bodies. That would probably have to be based on some private viewing. It's a pity that there are some people who cannot enjoy these fantastic pictures, or even think some of the photos would be "pornographic". The problem exists - in their minds - and nowhere else. They have simply not understand the sense of this book. The pictures in this great book are so marvellous. The depicted children show such a grace and dignity which most people have lost for a long time in everyday life. It's the remembrance at the own childhood, at the lost (better ?) time that will never come back, which this book expresses in a unique way like no other before. Thank you Jock Sturges for sharing these beautiful pictures and deep respect for all the people in this book. Zusatzinfo 159 Duotone Abb. Hardcover. Zustand: gut. 2014. Fanny is an extended portrait of a young girl's transition from child to woman. Made over a period of 23 years, the images are at once beautiful in their detail of light and identity and also frankly anthropological in their descriptive effect. A naturist since birth, Fanny's comfort with nudity and her natural self has allowed Sturges to draw an engaging portrait of the evolution of a human being with few social distractions. His access to the girl's and woman's character is direct and fascinating. Long known for his extended portraits of children and adolescents, this work is strong evidence of Sturges' permanent commitment to the people in his work. Hardcover. Zustand: gut. 2015. Alain Laboile resides with his family in a village in the southwest of France. A sculptor by trade, he acquired his first camera only a few years ago. But soon his six children and their natural and uninhibited lifestyle came to dominate his camera's attention: "Through my photographic work I celebrate and document my family life: a life on the edge of the world, where intemporality and the universality of childhood meet. Though my work is deeply personal, it is also accessible, addressing human nature and allowing the viewer to enter my world and reflect on their own childhoods." Born on May 1, 1968 in Bordeaux, France, Alain Laboile is a photographer and father of six. In 2004, as he needed to put together a portfolio of his work as a sculptor, he acquired a camera, and thus developped a taste for macrophotography, spurred by his passion for entomology. Later on, he pointed his lens towards his growing family which became his major subject : a life on the edge of the world, where intemporality and the universality of childhood meet. Jock Sturges is a fine art photographer living in Seattle, Washington in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Best known for his nudes and extended portraits of families in Northern California counter-culture communities, Ireland and on French naturist beaches, his large format images borrow significantly from classical periods in both photography and nineteenth and early twentieth century painting. Represented by 26 galleries in ten countries, Mr. Sturges' work is also to be found in the collection of many of the world's museums including The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and The Frankfurt Museum of Modern Art in Germany. His published works include Jock Sturges, Scalo, Zurich, 1996, published in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt and another Scalo monograph entitled Jock Sturges New Work 1996 2000 was published in October, 2000. Other titles to his name include: The Last Day of Summer, Aperture, NY, 1992; Radiant Identities, Aperture, NY 1994; 25 Years, with the Paul Cava Gallery, Philadelphia 2004; Evolutions of Grace, Gakken, Tokyo, 1994 and Notes, Aperture, NY, 2005. Hardcover. Zustand: gut. 2008. Over the course of his career, Jock Sturges' long-term engagement with his subjects has been a cornerstone of his work. Misty Dawn, one of his primary and most popular muses, is one such subject; he has photographed her for 25 of her 28 years. Lithe, beautiful, classically proportioned, she is the personification of Sturges' philosophy of being at home in one's body. This volume follows her growth from a shy, tomboyish child to a gorgeous, confident young woman. Taken as a whole, this series of images presents a unique, fully realized portrait of a blossoming individual and explores a rare and beautiful relationship between photographer and subject. "Misty Dawn: Portrait of a Muse" presents iconic images as well as previously unpublished material, mined from Sturges' older contact sheets and newest work. Jock Sturges, born in New York in 1947, received a B.A. in perceptual psychology and photography from Marlboro College in Vermont in 1974 and an M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1985. He has exhibited internationally, and his photographs are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. His previous Aperture books include "Notes, The Last Day of Summer" and "Radiant Identities."
