On offer here is a rare set of early books about travelers visiting China in the early 19th century, titled: "The Stranger in China; or, the Fan-Qui's Visit to the Celestial Empire in 1836-7" by C. Toogood Downing. This two-volume set of small hard cover books were published by Lea & Blanchard of Philadelphia in 1838. I only found one copy of one volume in decidedly battered condition, online. This is the story of an Englishman visiting Southern China and many interesting and often minute details about life there before outsiders had an impact on it. Condition: Both volumes are present and both are only in good (maybe fair) condition. Both volumes have darkened covers and damaged title labels on the spine. Volume 2 has apparently been published upside down, with the text opposite the alignment of the title label on the spine. The books are soiled, water stained and toned, with insect holes into the text blocks (please see my photos). There has been some attempt to save the binding with librian's tape in volume 1.…
